The iPhone is an iCult. There really is no other plausible reason to explain how normal, intelligent, otherwise sane and practical people spend $1000 on a phone (that's what my friend paid for his iPhone6).

Wow, how arrogant of you. Just because you can't afford one, doesn't mean anybody who buys one is not normal, intelligent, sane or practical.

I had android for years. I prefer iPhone. No bugs. Everything just works. Battery is saved when not using the phone.

One reason people can afford the iPhones is that it is very easy to sell it once you are done with it and make back most of your original purchase price. Apple products are great resellers

Apple makes good products but they are overpriced. But my biggest beef against them is their software, actually. Not the quality of it but the very strict you-will-do-it-our-way attitude. Guess I like my freedom and I accept the flaws. And you'll never recoup your purchase price, not even close. And if someone gives you even $400 for a four-year-old, terribly out-of-spec scratched up iPhone I'll say the same thing about them.

And, geeze, ddt, need a little something to take the edge off? First, I never said I couldn't afford it, I'd just rather spend my money on things I need. Second, I wasn't even talking to you. Third I was making a joke. Fourth, I never said you (or anyone) is stupid or insane or illogical, I said (again, should I provide a link to the dictionary definition of "joke"?) that a normal, intelligent, sane, logical person would not spend $1000 on a phone unless a cult mentality was involved.

On second though, strike the joke part. I think I was bang on!

I don't get it prags, I wouldn't pay a 1000 either but I bet that by January I'll be able to get an iPhone 6 for 0$ with a two year contract. Sure the contract for an iPhone will likely be 10$ more per month than with an android but that will likely be 240$ more by the end of its contract. So that's a fair price I would say for superior quality.

I sold my iphone 5 last spring for $125. Not a huge chunk of change, but I didn't put any money down on the phone and paid it off with a $50 unlimited talk, text, long distance (within canada and usa), and 5G of data monthly. A portion of that $50 (which is less than most plans in ontario) went to the phone and I never felt the cost.

Worked for me.

Spader, I'm not sure you are aware, but outside of Manitoba/Saskatchewan things are very different.  There are people charging $100 on kijiji to set someone up with a Saskatchewan mobile plan (for people living in, say Quebec).  When I got my wife's Galaxy Note 3 (more than 3 years ago) the best deal I could get was $80/month for a half-gig data plan (only available on a data plan).  I got $5 off because I had TV/internet/home phone with Bell. When the 2 years were up they dropped it to $70.

So there's no way someone in Ontario or Quebec could get a premium phone (for "free") without a premium plan.

Heh, and I'm the one who needs to take the edge off...

Again just because YOU choose to spend your money on things you need, does not mean others cannot spend money on luxury items without being stupid, insane, illogical or part of a cult (yeah sorry I forgot the "part of a cult" shot). And I learned a long time ago that when people complain that they would never buy something because it's simply a waste of money, it usually is simply a complaint that they can't afford it.

I'm pretty sure he can afford one. He's buying phones and tablets every 8 weeks.

iPhone is the major product of the iWant iCult. The proof is everywhere. No need to argue about it.

But having owned both an iPhone and a galaxy I have to admit to the superiority of the iPhone. You can call it cult if you want it but if they were equal products they wouldn't have the reputation they do. They are exceptionally well made products. Even if I have my doubts on how much better is the iPhone 7

Which Galaxy are you talking about? I'm guessing the S7 and Edge? I thought those ones were overpriced as well. I'd take a Nexus 6 over an iPhone 6 right now. Friend at work in a cube across the aisle just got the 6P. It's a bit too big (IMO) but very nice looking. I'm guessing the Nexus 6 and 6P would be quite similar? The screen on my wife's Note 3 was much better than the latest iPhone at the time and the Nexus has the same AMOLED display but QHD. The iPhone still has some of the best phones in the space but the Nexus one is very good as well. I don't care for megapixels very mush -- the iPhone's 8MP is plenty for a phone camera; but I like the f/2.0 aperture on the Nexus. I still say the LG G4 has the best camera (apart from the Lumix with the 1" sensor -- but no idea if the phone part is any good on that one, and it's also a $1K phone).

My Redmi Not 3 has shipped. Mind you, Friday is a holiday in China so not sure if it will get very far (don't know how it works with DHL once the package is picked up; maybe it's already in transit, out of China so Chinese stat holidays don't apply?) I got a tracking site and a tracking number; entering the tracking number at the tracking site gives a "Not found". Clicking on the tracking number in my order page pops up a tracking summary in Chinese. Google translate:

Oh, it's nothing like an iPhone. It's running MIUI 8. I'll play with that for a while then install CyanogenMod. That's one of the things about Android -- there are other "flavors" around you can try out.
