SSF, is this the modem you're getting: http://smartrg.com/products/products/sr505n/ ?

It's this one. I have 2 of them. One that I'm using and one that I hope to turn into an adapter in addition to my D-Link 501. Turning these routers into adapters seems a little complicated to me though but I'll give it a shot as soon as I'm done unpacking. So 4 - 6 weeks or so.

I'm not certain what you mean by "adapter". Do you mean like a network switch, where you plug one cable in from your main router/modem and can just plug computers in with ethernet cables and it networks them together?

Essentially like the "antenna" that picks up the wifi signal rather than transmits it. I guess the reverse of what a router does.

Best of luck...networking stuff can be a huge pain in the Donkey, so hopefully it works out the first time.

So far so good. My friends at Bell only took 3 days to get my modem to work properly!

3 days! You must've bribed them.

A router routes; there is no reverse of that.  And an antenna that just receives is useless for wifi.

I think you mean you want it to simply extend the range of your signal and not perform any routing functions.  Sort of of a wireless bridge, I guess.

EDIT: I guess I should have read the rest of the thread first.

Tragically, it looks like I will have to spend some dough on this project...

I had a decent monitor set aside but it appears my son may have swapped it for DVDs or a couple of games.

Cheap monitor retailers, please.

Good cheap monitor? The BenQ GL2450.

http://www.amazon.ca/BenQ-GL2460HM-24-inch-Monitor-HDMI/dp/B00IKDFL4O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407522796&sr=8-1&keywords=BenQ+GL2450

No HDMI though.

Free shipping too. Huzzah.

Great suggestions. The more I look at the prospect of dropping a C-Note or more on a monitor that I thought I didn't need, the angrier I'm getting.

Maybe hit up a local computer/parts store to see if they have any cheap refurb monitors.

I did and they charge basically the same as what you and Tim proposed for their used shizz. I still intend to check a pawnshop and see if there's any other thrift stores around.
