Hopefully EK isn't just on a tear because it's a contract year, maybe next year he'll decline like Doughty(hope not).

He'll want $65 to match his jersey number, so add a team option 11th year at $2M Sarcasm

Unless he skips camp and puts on 15-20lbs of fat, it won't happen.

Doughty also made his money based on the Olympics, not NHL hockey.

I would hope for that but what you don't want is Cap Space being an issue when Cowen, Z-Bad and all the other prospects start needing contracts at the same time...never want to have another "Redden Vs Chara" decision ever again....

Keep both would have worked then and should work now.

That's my favorite line for players like Karlsson. That and he doesn't know how to play without the puck in his own end because he isn't 225lbs.

People are so stupid.

Or they are using sarcasim.

Deal.

I was not being serious. A $2M team option for a 33 year old All Star?

I dunno. Before yesterday's game. I thought Spezza would replace Alfie as C. Now I think #65 would probably a better choice.....

This kid is worth every penny you throw at him....

Assuming that EK will lead the league in points by a D-Man every year is probably a LITTLE silly.

That said, he's doing it now, and will need to be paid as such. Somewhere between $6-$6.5M/year, as discussed, on as long a term as both sides can stomach...probably somewhere in the 6-8 years range.

The one thing to worry about is whether or not he becomes complacent after signing the big contract...and with EK, he seems to have a desire to win, not just get paid.

To summarize, this is exactly the kind of guy that you open your wallet for, as the risks are about as low as you can get (healthy, strong desire to win, young, etc).

10 years is too long at this point. 1 concussion/ripped knee/broken back and we're waaay too screwed. 6 or 7 years tops as his body may not last

That's a risk you take with THE franchise player IMO.

I don't see Murray getting in on the ridiculous 10 plus year trend that's going on right now personally. I'd say 6 or 7 years is on the long end of what they come up with.

About 7 years, $49 million. (Similar to what Spezza and Heatley got after the cup finals). I think the organization is weary of going any longer than that.

That seems to be the going rate for a young stud who has one half season of stellar work under his belt.

Either a 2 or 3 year x 4.5M or a 10 x 5.5M would be my guesses. No way will it be a contract in the 4-6 year range. He is an RFA for 4 more years, so there is no need to panic yet.

He's like Myers was, except instead of having a sophomore slump he's leading the league among defensemen, and has been on the ice for 73% of the Sens' goals. Why on earth would you think he would settle for 2-3 years x $4.5M?

Because as an RFA, he's as "under control" as possible in the world of hockey. So, either the Sens go for a deal that takes him to the end of his RFA term (but not beyond), then re-assess then, or they go all out and go for 7-10 deal, but they make sure they pay less for the RFA years, then combine that with the UFA years and take the average.

Give him whatever he Cussing wants. It's not like the Sens can't afford it. No sense pulling an LA with Doughty.
