Described as most as a PP Specialist who had a freak injury that derailed him. Would've scored around 40 points if he remained healthy - on a team that doesn't score a whole lot.

Tiny little guy though, not really a Murray or Hartsburg style player.

With a cap hit of only $825,000 it's a tempting thing to do. But who moves out to make room for him?

I went to highschool with Cory. My brother played baseball with his older brother and I would see Cory at some games and hang out with him here and there. I haven't seen him in years, as he went to Russia after highschool to play. From what I remember he is a really nice guy, with lots of drive and passion. Total character guy who has paid his dues in Europe. Having said that I think he is a Murray type player based on the fact that he would want to be here and work very hard. I see him as being a Streit/ MA Bergeron type defenseman. Wouldn't hurt to at least sign him to a two-way deal, as Bingo doesn't have a lot of depth on D. He seemed to hold his own 2 years ago running the PP for Team Canada at the Worlds. That says a lot about his abilities IMO.

I don't know who would move LOL. We're kind of stick=piled at the moment.

Snuh: great read about his passion and drive. Thanks for that! I didn't know that much about him.

Born in Kanata.

Here's Sportsnet's read on him:

From: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/players/Cory_Murphy/

Assets:
Moves the puck well and can rack up points while quarterbacking the
power play. He has rounded out his game by logging big minutes in
Europe.

Flaws:
Must still prove he can defend bigger forwards in the NHL, as well as
adjust to the speed of the game in order to thrive at the highest
level.

Richardson. Send him and his $500,000, 2-way contract down and insert Murphy as your 7th D, and then let him, Picard, and Lee fight it out for ice time. Total cap hit against us: $325,000. It'd be totally worth it. We have 3 or 4 guys (Phillips, Volchenkov, Smith, and Kuba) who can do what Richardson do, better. We only have 1 guy at best (Kuba) who can do what Murphy can do on the PP, and 2 unproven players. I think the competition and depth would be a perfect fit. Again, he's done it at the NHL level (at least before the freak injury and misdiagnoses) and at the Finnish Elite League level.

Something tells me we won't do this to Richardson, tho', which is a real shame because it means we won't be putting in a claim.

I have a feeling you're right.

Well, Bingo needs help, so perhaps sending Richardson isn't such a bad idea. The only other player you can send down is Lee....

I think if Murray were to put in a claim Lee would be sent back down just to gain more experience while helping the farm.

It's a risk free pick up. You can take a chance on him and re-assign Lee to Bingo if they feel he needs it (I don't think it will happen) or you send Richardson down and keep Murphy as your 7th d-man. And worse comes to worse you waive Murphy and should he clear you've got yourself some blueline help in Bingo.

Totally agree.

Still no word anywhere (that I can find, anyway) as to whether or not he's cleared waivers.... we should know very soon.

I find it hard to find anything, at least on TSN or Sportsnet, whether they cleared or not. They will tell you when someone is waived or claimed, but usually not if they clear.

Still no word on Murphy. This is all I could find at the Miami Herald:

"Don't know what's going on with Cory Murphy, although it doesn't sound like he's been picked up. Caught him coming out of the arena today, said he knows the FLA blueline is very strong and he's not upset with the Panthers for waiving him. If he is assigned to Rochester, he'll go, saying he'll continue to work his tail off in hopes of coming back."

Either it's a really busy day and it's taking time for the news of his being claimed to trickle down, or he's cleared.

I'm sure there was a flurry of activity at 3pm ET due to the deadline so it will probably take some time for it to all trickle out of the NHL etc...

Can he play a Streit-esque role?
