American Cheese is what we call "processed cheese" like Kraft Singles. Except American Cheese is about 1/3 the price of what we pay for "processed cheese" such as Kraft Singles.

In the US they have "American Cheese" which is *not* processed cheese. I once heard someone say that it's the American version of Swiss.

The point is I was talking about cheese made in North America which is a very wide variety of cheeses.

I wasn't talking about "American cheese" or processed cheese.

Our family has a running joke here that American cheese has to be the best cheese in the world because it's made in America. We use this saying to describe such shows as Dancing with the Stars and American Idol.

Eg. America's got talent is 2 slices worth of American cheese.

SSF is correct about the price of dairy. Its 1/3 the price here.

Dairy prices in Ottwa (Ontario?) are ridiculous. I was nearly in shock when I moved up from Montreal. Montreal is not as good as the States but it's still much better than Ottawa. 340 grams of shredded cheese regularly priced at something like $8???! That's Krapft for you, but cheese prices are universally high. Whenever my parents visit they always bring food. I check the labels on the cheese they bring and it's sad how much more we are paying here.

Dairy board is very strong here. Same with poultry. Turkeys in the US go for 49 cents/lb while here it's $1.99. Same pound, nearly the same dollar. Alcohol is another one. How can they get away with what they do here is astounding. Seriously, we need a tax revolt. Ever try to calculate how much of your income goes to the various taxes?

The prices of beer are Cussing ridiculous in Ontario. Fortunately, I work in Gatineau, so I buy my beer at Super C or sometimes Costco. I can usually get a case of Keiths/Rickards/Blue/whatever for less than $30, whereas in Ontario, it'd be around $40+.

I think I'm just gonna start buying my groceries in the US.

Is there a big premium for milk that is not from genetically modified cows?

I don't have vast experience, but I've found that fresh produce is actually similarly priced, if not more expensive in the US. I'm not so sure about meat…but pretty much all the processed food is cheaper.

My wife's American so she's regular appalled at the prices here. I think you are correct about fresh produce, generally speaking it's fairly competitive. Depends on the fruit/veggie, I think asparagus is pretty pricey for example.

After watching Food Inc, I'm at Farm Boy more often, the less processed food the better.

The burning question here is how will this affect Ketchup sales?
