hmm I'm gonna agree with spader (and to an extent, penguins fanboy). You're just driving more ppl away and if I also had to enter my corporate email at the time of registration, then I wouldn't join

Not off topic at all. The picture illustrates a new member being sponsored by two existing ones. You can fill-in the names of the two from your foes list.

[1] doesn't that limit new membership fairly severely? I came across this site in a google search (and signed up with my hotmail, the only email i have). I wouldn't be here if you'd passed these rules a year and a half ago. Don't we want more people coming to the boards?

[2] is that a danger? Did I miss something, or are we just protecting against the possibilityof someone spamming and/or preying on our vulnerable membership?

I don't get it. Wouldn't it be easy for a mod to toss someone that's being a Richard? Why do we have to be an exclusive club?

The registration page has not changed yet, and the registration process is not going to change without changes to the code (i.e. not going to happen). So, at the end of the day, the registration request will have to be processed by a mod. If we enforce the no-free-email rule we should be OK, I think.

We also have a facebook account now. Maybe Dash can figure out a way of using that, somehow, to vet new members?

All that I know is that new members seem to show up organically. We've had a few people join recently (tim, sandy, 22, etc) and we'd be a far less interesting site if we take that organic growth out of the equation. I don't go around talking about this site to everyone I know that loves hockey. I may mention it, but I'm sure not looking for people to sponsor.

Unless something happened that I missed (I keep thinking of the perverts that infiltrated the social networking aspect of Dunder Mifflin's website), then I don't understand why we have to protect ourselves from the evil internet spammers and predators that will surely snatch up our children and eat our brains. Simply put, I don't think that we need to protect our membership from cyberthreats. Seems unnecessary and counter-productive.

Let me repeat, the corporate e-mail would only be used for the initial exchange with a mod, it would not go into your profile.

That has to be *clearly* indicated in the Registration page text.

That is completely legitimate. Bank account or credit numbers can be used in lieu of corporate email address! :skater:

We have no way to verify bank accounts and credit card numbers, unless we start charging for membership. You sure you want to go that way? I'm sure the co-founders would not be completely against that idea

ok i get that but i know myself and others are randoms that found our way here through other uses of the internet no through members how would they get into the site? example i found this site through clutches shamelessness on HB where he often would post for good hockey talk come to gmhockey(or something) now he doesnt do that but spader (i believe) found it from google how do we get these good people weeded out from the jerks

I am not trying to cause problem but am trying to understand how the sponsership works
