LOL. Cussing awesome profile pic. I just watched that episode a few weeks ago.
Haha, sorry a bit off topic
All that I know is that new members seem to show up organically. We've had a few people join recently (tim, sandy, 22, etc) and we'd be a far less interesting site if we take that organic growth out of the equation. I don't go around talking about this site to everyone I know that loves hockey. I may mention it, but I'm sure not looking for people to sponsor.wprager wrote:spader wrote:SpezDispenser wrote:From here on, we will need new members to:
a) [1] be sponsored by an existing member who's been active with GMHockey as a poster for at *least* 6 months. If we don't recognize the sponsor, we as Admins have the right to decline the new member based on that alone.
b)no hotmail accounts, real e-mail accounts only. Reduces any risks of members joining to spam etc.
So that's that then, something we've been talking about for a while now has come into effect - if for no other reason than [2] to protect the site from any kind of malicious and/or predatory behavior.
borrowing Roche's style here...
[1] doesn't that limit new membership fairly severely? I came across this site in a google search (and signed up with my hotmail, the only email i have). I wouldn't be here if you'd passed these rules a year and a half ago. Don't we want more people coming to the boards?
[2] is that a danger? Did I miss something, or are we just protecting against the possibilityof someone spamming and/or preying on our vulnerable membership?
I don't get it. Wouldn't it be easy for a mod to toss someone that's being a Richard? Why do we have to be an exclusive club?
Good point.
The registration page has not changed yet, and the registration process is not going to change without changes to the code (i.e. not going to happen). So, at the end of the day, the registration request will have to be processed by a mod. If we enforce the no-free-email rule we should be OK, I think.
We also have a facebook account now. Maybe Dash can figure out a way of using that, somehow, to vet new members?

Let me repeat, the corporate e-mail would only be used for the initial exchange with a mod, it would not go into your profile.
That has to be *clearly* indicated in the Registration page text.

Unless something happened that I missed (I keep thinking of the perverts that infiltrated the social networking aspect of Dunder Mifflin's website), then I don't understand why we have to protect ourselves from the evil internet spammers and predators that will surely snatch up our children and eat our brains. Simply put, I don't think that we need to protect our membership from cyberthreats. Seems unnecessary and counter-productive.

but you still require my corporate email as the absolute first email entered right? I don't want my corporate email entered at all.....anywhere....ever.

ok im an totally ignorant of how this is going to work so when the mods allow someone do they then ask someone ( i assume we get a list of people who want to be sponsers) if they will be the sponser for said new individual?

The process has not changed. The new user applies and a mod has to approve that application. The process will change, somewhat. If an existing member PMs the mods (by the way, we really should configure a "user group" for mods to simplify PMing them all en masse) and says "My buddy so-and-so wants to join; his e-mail address is xxx" then when a mod sees a person matching that description signing up, they can quickly process the application. If not, then it may take a bit longer.
I don't have all the answers (hey, deja vu) but I'm sure we will figure it out.

I don't think sponsorship is essential, it will just speed things along.
