Murray is simply recalling his coaching experiences and that Chris followed directions well then.

It doesn't mean he does not do that now.

yes, but it's fun to quote him well out of context....

Where were all the other GMs when this went down? San Jose? Montreal? Pittsburgh? And on and on and on - so many teams could have used Kelly going into the playoffs - or even a playoff run - PLUS, they have him under contract next year as well and they let the Bs have him for a 2nd? That's crazy.

Right now, those same teams that lost out, should be ready with a serious offer for Phillips and Neil to begin. Montreal would probably be best to do something, lest they want to be destroyed in the POs (it'll happen anyway, but the GM might want to give the team a fighting chance).

If I was a Montreal fan, I'd be yelling for Gauthier to acquire Neil - right now - for a 2nd or prospect. And if they can get Phillips in there as well for a 1st + prospect, then you do both - and you do it NOW - of course, Murray will make them sweat, but it sure seemed easy for th Bs to acquire a great character guy like Kelly last night - other GMs might want to wake up.

As for the trade itself, I'm mixed on it.

I like it because: there are guys who can do Kelly's job, both in the system and available every year (Madden, Pandolfo, Pahlsson etc. etc.), and as they get into their 30s, they get less $$, for example: Madden getting 1.2. Plus, as we sign a UFA like Madden, we also get a 2nd round pick - which with our scouts have recently yielded guys like Lehner, Silfverberg and Wiercioch.

I dislike it because: Kelly's a great player, the ultimate utility player who can play top 6 or bottom 6, PK with the best of them, is a hard worker, and finally, is someone who fit in PERFECTLY for Fisher as the bonafide 3rd line C on this team. I understand the move from a pick + Kelly's value will never be higher, but at the same time, it's a tough one to swallow right now.

Don't know if this is the right place, but I was telling a couple of guys today in the office how I had to break the news to my 7 year old this morning that his favorite player was traded.

While I realize this is sport, it felt almost like having to tell him his grand mother had passed away. I know the latter is a major thing, and there is no comparison but at first when waking him up and breaking the news it felt eerily similar.

His reaction though was heartbreaking. He was devastated and had a tonne of questions, about would he ever come back, to was he a bad team mate to why don't the Senators like him.

Anyway, the guys at work not being Canadian looked at me and one literally said, "now I know what it means to be Canadian. Being upset over a hockey trade!"

It hit me then, you know you're truly Canadian when you wake a young child up to tell him his favorite player on his favorite team has been traded and have to help him cope with the news...

Yeah, that was sort of my point.

yikes. Sorry about your kid being down 22_4_ever. Although, I'm not surprised that would be the case from your name.

I was kinda depressed last night when I found out kelly was traded. I didn't care about the return, it was just tough watching what was once an amazing team just get torn down. It really hit home yesterday that this was not going to be the same team anymore....and going through a rebuild is much easier said than done.

That said, we need a kelly appreciation thread...STAT!

EDIT: I should just open my eyes wider and see that a thread has already been created. Good job SG11!!

i think after all is done, winchester is the guy they are keeping to take kelly's place. smith is also very capable. that does leave Regin as our number 2 center and you know what? that's fine by me. we'll have plenty of time from now till the end of the season to see if he's capable of handling that duty. if he is and does a good job then we might not have to look for a replacement there.

i seriously don't mind what's happening. it's giving a bunch of guys the chance to come up and shine. instead of prepping for the season all summer for the season to start it's puting our guys from bingo in there for the rest of the season and we get a good look at what we've got.
there may not be an amazing crop of FA this year but if we need to go shopping we'll have enough players to choose from if our young guys aren't cutting it.

i'm looking forward to more moves in the next couple of weeks from BM.
i'm sorry to see the guys go but what did we think? teams would be falling over themselves to grab guys our team don't want? Kuba? Lee? kovalev???
let's not kid ourselves. if we were sellers and are looking to actually rebuild, let's act like it.

This is a great point. Most of the people on this site want the team to tank and many have been calling for a rebuild. It's ridiculous to think that we can rebuild through the draft if we're only willing to give up pending UFAs and players that aren't cutting it. Kovalev is overpaid for his production and disappears like it's his job, Gonchar is minus a jillion and signed to one year too many, Kuba is made of some sort of cotton/glass composite (soft and breakable), etc. While all three of those players have some value, you have to expect a sea change in a rebuild. Trading a member of the old guard--of the core--is part and parcel of that process.

I think I like this trade. A second is actually a little bit of an overpayment for Kelly, particularly if it's Minny's. He's a good, rock-solid middle-6 guy, but he's replaceable, possibly even internally (Smith, Winny). BM mentioned in the presser that he sees one of the bottom-6 guys making the jump, making Kelly more expendable. Quite a few of us have been talking about Smith and Winchester doing just that.

Most of us think Kelly is the bomb, and for his role, he's been excellent in Ottawa. I just don't think that we get to rebuild without tearing down part of the foundation.

This was a good trade. Kelly is a 30 year old third line centre (watch where Boston plays him) that does not fit into a 3 year rebuild plan.

We got a 2nd round draft pick-look at what our scouts have done with 2nd round picks, Plus cleared 2.2 million.

With 4 picks so far in the top 60 and probabbly 2-3 more coming we are in for a great draft day and a young fast team to watch over the next three years. Add to that, we will be picking in the top 10 for the next couple years and this team three years from now will be awesome.

I would also be willing to take on some bad expiring contracts with our new cap space if we got prospects/picks with them-for example sheldon souray and his 5.4 million hit that expires next year for Omark or their 2nd rounder. There are many teams that would gladly give up picks to rid themselves of bad contracts that Ottawa can absorb why we rebuild.

If we do this right we could have probably 6 picks in the top 2 rounds this year, and 4 in next years!!

Take a look and get excited

How about
2. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
15. Matt Puempel
32. Niklas Jensen
59. John Gibson
Plus maybe two more.....

That's what I'm talking about. If nothing else, it's an extra that we can add to a package.
BM: "Kovalev for your 2nd?"
OtherGM: "No chance Marbles. Try again."
BM: "We'll also take ______ off your hands to free up some space for you to make other moves."
OGM: "DEAL!" Fireworks

PartyTime! ensues. That is all.

Yes, we are probably going to see some bad contracts come our way but you have to ignore that and focus on the picks

This is a true rebuild where if done right, could add 4-5 top prospects, and 4-5 good prospects to our system over the next 3 years.

That is something we have not had in for.... well ever!!!!

Karlsson
Rundblad
Nugent-Hopkins??
Jensen??
Top 10 pick 2012
Top10 pick 2013

Its going to be fun

How does RNH fit in a 3 year rebuild? He won't even be on the roster in 3 years will he?

What would help me to swallow this trade better was if Murray was to swing a trade with another team to take a pending UFA with a bloated contract off of their hands for the rest of the year and in return got a pick as well.

Now with that said, I doubt Gene would want to spend more money now even if it meant adding picks..he wants to minimize his spending for the next 3 months.

In a rebuild? He'll be on the roster next year or the year after - depending on how quickly he can put some meat on his bones.

So we've traded 2 assistant captains this week? Who's next, Phillips for the trifecta? If I'm a player, and offered the 'A', and I don't want to be traded, I wouldn't accept it. Don't take the 'A' Neil!!!!!

You dont think RNH will be on the roster of a rebuilding Senators team within three years???

No one will be expecting us to win for a while but they should be played to get the experience.

If you count our 3rd rounder, we have 5 of the first 63 picks.
