But why are we not seriously considering Regin, Shannon, Winchester. Is Winch really doing much of anything to help out? Smith should have his spot. Yes, I know it's a little harsh. And is there any way to send Regin back to the AHL for a year? I don't see why he deserves a spot in the roster over, say, Butler.

IMO you need at least 3 or 4 Winchester, Smith or Shannon-type players. Their utility, roles and salary are a must as part of the equation that equals a winning formula.

Not Shannon, he's useless, and I don't care how much money he makes. All he has is speed, but speed's nothing if you don't use it to do something else.

I disagree. Able to play any role mid-game, at almost bare minumum salary, a bit of energy and that is good enough for me right there.

He is as versatile and cheap as they come; that in itself is valuable to any team.

I like Shannon.

We've had this Shannon discussion before you and I, but I'll say it again, that with Winchester and Smith most likely to be locks on this team next year, we can afford to let Shannon walk.

SDH89 is right. Even if you like him, there's no chance that he gets re-signed.

We will see what happens. I never said Ottawa would sign him - this time around the discussion at least - as I have no way of knowing that. I don't recall our last conversation, sorry. All I am saying is teams need players like him.

I agree with both bolded statements. Choose any one (or two) of Greening, Condra, or O'Brien to round it out next year.

They are all signed for more money than Shannon currently; a lot more actually, if they were in the NHL.

Plus, Shannon is proven.

One of those guys can be the 4th player I was talking about IMO.

Edmonton won last night! The Oilers can now tie us with their game in hand and the Islanders can pass us with their 2 games in hand. I realize games in hand mean little when we're talking about these two teams but it still leaves a last place finish as a real possibility.

The funny thing is that we thought we were fighting for a 4th place finish a few short weeks ago. 1st overall is becoming more and more likely. Man, January was a bittersweet month.

$800-850k versus $625k (with the possibility of a slight raise) isn't much of a difference, particularly when we ride the cap space train into the beginning of the season. I don't dislike Shannon, but would rather see one of those guys come up. Hopefully whichever one (or two) of those on that list come up has more upside than Shannon seems to have (O'Brien, for example).

Isles host the Leafs tonight and the Devils host the Hurricanes. Go home teams!

We could find ourselves last in the East tonight...

Shannon is 27, he is what he is, he's not going to get any better than he is now.

I'd rather make room for someone who can potentially grow and develop here.

He's not a prototypical bottom six player either and he's not good enough to crack top six either. Nice player to have around but not integral by any means.

Shannon could be a decent deadline acquisition for a team looking for a bit of experience. Guy has a Stanley Cup after all.

We should be already. Isles have 2 games in hand on us and we are only ahead of them by a single loser point. But, yes, we could be Least in the East tonight if the Isles win or at least get to OT.

I think it wasn't even 2 weeks ago that I said there's no way we could catch the Devils (a few others have said so as well). They're not only ahead of us, but they are making a case for the playoffs.

In their last 10 games the Devils are 7-1-2 while Carolina is 5-5. That means they've caught up by 6 points in 10 games. At that rate, they will be 10 points behind at the 63-game mark and only 4 points back with 9 games remaining.

Wouldn't that be something.
