I agree with Rooney on this one.

I think if anything does end up happening there will be salary changing hands (something I think Ottawa wants to avoid)

So why waive him in the first place? Was he *hoping* to lose him for nothing, because trading him would be more "costly"? That's more scary than Melnyk/s secret divorce proceedings.

Cap space is a commodity in today's NHL.

Would you rather have James Sheppard or the cap space to call up Butler or make a trade for a top-six winger?

It looks worse to lose him for *nothing* but it's a smart business move in today's market.
