As Ottawa fans we should know it isn't easy. How many players did we pursue that said "no thanks" and others that would cost more than you'd be willing to give up?

If I am a GM of a team and my only affordable and reasonable options are the two guys I already have, then why not. Not like the Leafs are in dire need to win as long as they keep selling out.

I'm gonna have to agree. It's just like saying the NHL owners are not in dire need of having a season if they keep selling copies of NHL 13 to so-called "fans."

Yes because all the owners and the teams in the NHL are as profitable as the Leafs are.

He's got absolutely no excuse. It's a big city so no RFAs will use the Edmonton excuse to stay away. Fletcher cleared the plate for him as already mentioned. He's got as much money to spend as the cap will allow (and a bit more, usually). He's had lots of very good draft positions. What has he done? This is the only team in the league that hasn't see a playoff game live since the last lockout. He has done some very nearsighted moves, which is sometimes OK if your aim is to make the playoffs at any cost; but as mentioned before, he has managed to keep his team out of the playoffs. He has failed to deliver on *any* of his promises. If he were anyone else he would have been fired at the end of the season or earlier.

What would I have him do?
- not trade high draft picks for guys picked last at the ASG
- build a *team*
- stop blowing hot air an calling a press conference every time he feels a fart coming on
- hire some scouts who know what they are doing
- let those picks develop in the minors, or put up with mistakes and nurture them through the growing pains, rather than benching and demoting them for making rookie mistakes

Is that enough?

Not really, still doesn't have anything to do with goaltending.

What will be interesting will be if they have issues in net to start off, will he try and pull the trigger on a deal... maybe convince Luongo it is his destiny...

After these last years in Toronto, Reimer would be my backup and I'd have acquired a real number one. Maybe Reimer's the guy, maybe he isn't, but if the Leafs suck again this year, there's no other direction to go but to fire Burke. So I'd have gone out and got a goaltender. Preferably Luongo, but I'd settle for a Vokoun/Reimer duo. Something...

The guy pulls off the odd massive trade, but at this point there's only one way to go - make damn sure you're solid in net.

yeah I was just gonna say. Vokoun was available. there's other options too. he could go after bernier even if he's un-proven. he'd at least try to adress a need. or if florida does indeed land Luongo maybe they try and get Markstrom from them.
Burke is dead in the water. plain and simple.

That's all speculation. Was Vokoun really made available or just out of the blue traded without any other team knowing?

Luongo will not go to Toronto, as he has stated his preference is Florida. Also, Vancouver will want a ransom for him probably. If Burke traded for Luongo, he'd be criticized for that move as well.

Any likely trade will probably cost way too much, and as a fan of a hockey team you ought to respect that a GM is not willing to overpay and sacrifice any future for a quick solution. Otherwise you'd all be mad at Murray for not sending all of our prospects and picks to Anaheim for Bobby Ryan.

Your hero, Brian Jurke, is a fool. Just admit it.

What's your overall point here? Your first post in this debate was something like "What do you want him to do?" Is your position that Burke has done all that he can?

I can't explain myself any better than I already did.

I feel Reimer needs a guy with NHL experience to push him. I could possibly see a high end young goalie like Lindback, Bernier or maybe even Bobrovsky pushing him properly, but the more obvious is someone like Luongo.

Without it, you risk the exact same thing happening this year that happened last year - Reimer gets injured or gets tired, Dung the bed and you're out of the playoffs. And if they miss the playoffs again, I'd fire Burke, re-hire him so I could fire him again. Very poor job.

Mind you, by now I'd have replaced Burke.

Your question was, what would you have him do.

honestly my view of what Brian Burke has done is brought the team pretty much full circle then from what he'd inherited. he might have a few promising pieces on board but if that's all he's got to show for at this time then he's got a poor record to show. If the ownership group or Burke himself had any sense they'd do some asset management like we did in our terrible year and do a small rebuild. they have interesting prospect for sure but if they parted ways from some of their established players for prospects and picks in the next draft they could be looking at a much brighter future. they're gonna suck anyways might as well suck with a plan and give playing time to some of their young prospects without expectations.

He said they had 2 or 3 goalie coaches. Now how can you do that? Each coach would have a different theory or system. That is just plain stupid.

Don't the Leafs have like 10 GMs ? The MLSE Department of Redundancy Department.

The ones with the undone ties are the leaders. That's how the pecking order is determined.
