How Zbynek Michalek Fits With the Ottawa Senators

Coming off of his sixth NHL season, Zbynek Michalek is eligible for unrestricted free agency. While there will certainly be no shortage of suitors, the Czech blueliner may have already made up his mind on where he will play next season.

Rumors have it that the Ottawa Senators are interested in acquiring Michalek to fill the void that will more than likely be left by the exit of shutdown defenseman Anton Volchenkov. It is expected that Volchenkov will demand as much as $5 million per season on a long-term contract if he pursues the open market this summer. That's a hefty price tag for a guy who has never posted more than 19 points in a single NHL campaign.

Michalek, a current member of the Phoenix Coyotes, has recently been seen as the "poor man's" Volchenkov. But if you look at their playing styles and performances, the only thing poor about Michalek, when compared to Volchenkov, is the salary he will have next year.

I'm not convinced that he will be that much of a discount but I am convinced he will be better all-around than Volchenkov.

Some comments from Zbynek Michalek in October.

MICHALEK READY FOR FIRST TASTE OF PLAYOFFS
by Anthony Perez

While representing the Czech Republic at the Olympics, Michalek had the opportunity to play alongside his brother Milan of the Ottawa Senators. And his fondest memory from the Olympics is the quality time the two shared in Vancouver.

“It was our dream to be on one team, and when it came true, especially at a tournament like the Olympics and in Canada, it was amazing to share the experience with him,” Michalek said. “We were roommates and we hung out together everyday… Our family was there and it was so much fun off the ice and on the ice, too. I hope we’ll get another chance sometime in the future to play together again.”

Landing little Z would be a very, very nice consolation for losing Volchenkov. We're definitely going to need to find an affordable (and hopefully more versatile) #2/#3 defenceman ASAP if Volchenkov walks.
