Who will be San Jose's Captain?

For the 3rd time in 3 seasons, SJ will likely have a new captain. After removing the "C" from Patrick Marleau after the 2008-09 season, and giving it to Rob Blake, who will officially announce his retirement Friday, who will the San Jose Sharks name captain? Marleau, a pending UFA who had his most productive goal scoring campaign this season with 44, could be on his way out of San Jose. He was the team's captain from 2003-04 (in which he shared the "C" on a rotary basis) up until last season when San Jose decided they needed a change. Other candidates might include Alternate Captains Joe Thornton (1-yr left) or Dan Boyle (4-yrs left). Or maybe it will be "Superstar" Dany "F'N" Heatley, who cited lack of a leadership role as motive in his trade demands out of Ottawa. Or the Sharks might go with Ryane Clowe (3-yrs left), Marc-Edouard Vlasic (3-yrs left), Joe Pavelski (RFA) or Devin Setoguchi (RFA). Perhaps they go with youth and reward youngsters Jamie McGinn or Logan Couture?

For one thing, the revolving C is an indicator of a lack or confidence in the group.

Heatley will surely ask for the "C" and he would get it if Fartsburg was coaching that team.

Lee Versage would nominate McGinn and Couture.

I will kick off the voting, and I picked Heatley. He is one of the younger veterans, and is under contract for 4 more years and is their highest paid player. Not necessarily convincing reasons, but he has been an "A" in his past teams and perhaps they see him as a good choice because of stability. No guarantee Jumbo Joe returns after next season.

I think they gotta give it to Jumbo Joe. Make it HIS team.

I went with Joe Pavelski.

There's a reason they gave it to Blake as a stop-gap and I bet it's because they were eying Pavelski and were wondering if he was ready.

It's a little bit of an off the board pick, but it would be like giving it to a Dustin Brown/Brendan Morrow and knowing you have some stability with your captaincy.

Agreed. It's a no-brainer, if you ask me.

I guess it all depends what happens with Pavelski. I think the smart thing to do is lock him up long term. $4-5M x 5-8 years.

Re-signing Pavelski means Marleau is gone, unless Thornton is moved. But both Gooch and Lil Joe are due for raises. I can see $3M for Dev.

Does seem the logical choice. A veteran, with a long contract (pending the RFA/UFA re-signings) and has a bit of character, unlike some other veterans with a long contract.

Haha, I was gonna say the same thing.

So far Danny Boyle is leading the way, but for the couple of Superstar votes, there's only one official vote cast and that was me lol.
