Big deal. People make such a big deal about pedigree sometimes. This one ain't in the same league (well I guess technically he is) as his brothers.

Agreed. But people will always make a big deal about the whole pedigree angle (sometimes warranted, sometimes not).

I believe it would have been like Blake Wheeler - UFA.

Do you know why they said that he would re-enter the draft though? Was it just a mistake?

Way too early to right him off. He's only 19. Even if his career potential is a 3rd/4th liner, it cost Carolina a 5th round pick. This could be the beginning of something huge for Carolina.

Actually, players have re-entered the draft before. I think it's an age thing.

Matt Lombardi and Jarrett Stoll re-entered I believe.

There was talk that EDM 1st rounder Alex Plante would as well.

This is the move that will catapult the 'Canes back into Cup contention. They have just become the favourites in the East.

Would you go so far as to say the balance of power has shifted?

If I wanted to state the obvious, perhaps.

The Staals have been 3/3 in the NHL so far. I'd risk a 5th rounder on those odds.

How is it that Phoenix and Carolina were aloud to make a trade without the SCP being over? Are you alowed to do it if it's minor leaguers?

Technically, I'm pretty sure teams not in the playoffs can trade to their heart's content, regardless of what kind of player (i.e., NHLer, AHLer, etc.) might be involved.

Hmmm. That doesn't seem fair.

Did they say that, okay, he's on his first contract, so he re-enters the draft I guess. Must be an age + contract status proviso. Intriguing. Thinking

Sure, the risk/reward is huge (just don't count on it) Smile

There's a time frame in place to sign a player after you draft him. It's something like 2 or 3 years. If you draft a guy and don't sign him after that point, he re-enters the draft. A team can't hold a player hostage if they don't sign him.

It's like putting $3 bucks down on a Lotto649 ticket, but the odds are way better and your ticket has a family history of winning. Don't see any problem there.

That's why the Ottawa Senators drafted Simon Lajeunesse twice.
