It's right there in black and white, there's no way to talk yourself out of it. They just have to hope Beach and dudes like that are ready to go, 'cause they're coming in ready or not.

If not for his awesome skills, Ottawa should try to get Brent Burns just for his laugh, so that together with Spezza we can have the two guys in the NHL that love to laugh and giggle.

Spector doesn't really hold water IMO, he just recycles things from other places - which is fair enough, but may I ask the huge question:

Source?

Look:

Kane 6.3
Toews 6.3
Hossa 5.25
Byfuglien 3
Bolland 3.4
Versteeg 3.1
Keith 5.5
Seabrook 3.5 (enjoy this while it lasts - one more year that is)
Huet 5.6 (bury him in the minors? I think the NHLPA will have issues with that)
Campbell 7.1

10 players making 50 million dollars.

10 players....50 million dollars

OFFSEASON TALK: Defence! - Page 8 62136 Someone enlighten me on how they fill their roster with 11 more guys with 7 million. Campbell is gonzo.

We need DTR in here to save the day OFFSEASON TALK: Defence! - Page 8 159628

That's why we're trading Kuba and Foligno for Campbell. They rid themselves of a huge contract and pick up two players and cap space. We get that coveted #1 PMD. Hell, maybe we can even offload some prospects like Lee and Bass and take a Ladd, versteeg or Bolland back in return. If only...

I would guess that the Hawks will trade Campbell and a prospect and try to keep Versteeg and Bolland to move with Huet to entice a team to take him. There must be a taker for Huet, maybe Florida, but they have Markstrom coming. They need to move Vokoun while the getting's good. Maybe Vokoun for Huet, Versteeg, prospect/pick? Something like that. Campbell is now 100% tradeable, it's Huet that is not.

Exactly. And I'm sure we all remember Murray going after Campbell. They were about $0.5 million away in terms of money but we also had Heatley's contract to deal with as well as having Volchenkov on the roster.

Murray NEEDS to make this trade happen so he can address an issue that has plagued the Sens since (the good) Redden left. Build the D around two vets and starting plugging the prospects into the system. There really is no reason for one of Wiercioch/Cowen/Gyrba to make the team next year.

The only issue I have is that Campbell's locked in for 6 more years. That's hard to take with the kids we have coming up, but yeah, he's definitely a great player. People who have watched the Sharks/Hawks series have seen a guy booed soundly and he doesn't let it affect him at all, he's attacking the blueline, taking pressure of the Big 2 there, moving the puck well and he flattened Heatley yesterday - which makes him A-OK in my books. Lalalala

It's not just the salary structure that has changed, it's more the need that has changed. Ottawa NEEDS a #1 PMD to make their team better and this is their chance to get it.

If Murray can find a way to bring in Campbell and keep Cullen...the Sens will look really good.

Soupy is a better all-around D than people give him credit for.

Why can't they?

Figure Cullen's contract ($2.8 million) is slightly more than Volchenkov's ($2.5 million). The two more or less wash out.

Kuba ($3.7) and a signed Foligno (~$1.3 million) < Campbell ($7.1 million), but if you put Cheechoo in the minors ($3 million), Cheechoo, Kuba, Foligno ($8 million) > Campbell ($7.1 million). There should be just enough money left over here plus the departure of Donovan to pay Regin $2-3 million. After next year, Leclaire, Kovalev, and likely Ruutu are off the books and we've got plenty of cap room to do what we please.

1 million goes a long way when you have other guys like Smith and Bass who could do his job for half the price....

Michalek (4.3) - Spezza (7) - Alfredsson (5.6 with buyout)
Regin (1.2*) - Fisher (4.2) - Kovalev (5)
Ruutu (1.3) - Kelly (2.1) - Neil (2)
Winchester (0.9*) - Cullen (2.8) - Z.Smith (0.6)

Campbell (7.1) - Karlsson (1.3)
Phillips (3.5) - Lee (1.3)
Campoli (1.2*) - Carkner (0.7)

Elliott (0.9)
Leclaire (3.8)

= exactly 56.8

It would be hard to pull of without moving Kelly. Plus, this assumes Shannon is gone as well.

If Murray wants this team to take the next step, he will have to make hard decisions and real changes. That's a fact.

You just showed us all why.
