Sutton underperformed and struggled with injuries until this season,
which has been a totally different story.

Fans who don't watch the Isles think that the Sens are overpaying, but
purely based on performance this season Sutton's probably the best
defenseman moved so far (aside from Phaneuf obviously, and maybe
Leopold.)

As for the Isles, I hoped that they could get an actual warm body back
for him, but whatever. They had to move him for something.

I know some people might take issue with this but Sutton and Carkner sounds like a good idea. I have a feeling it would be a complete disaster.

Mobility on the back end is something that can't be overlooked. Maybe Murray's plan is to relocate Carkner to 7th defensemen duty? That was supposed to be the plan at the start of the year.

to anyone saying sutton is horrible, you obviously havent watched more
than a game or two of his this season. He's FINALLY healthy and has
been playing GREAT hockey this season. No matter who picked him up they
would have gotten a great addition to their D for a good run.

Laughing3 so true... wouldn't a deadline without Comrie coming to Ottawa... again... and again... only to leave to free agency year after year.

There's a selection of comments from actual Islanders fans, so Murray's obviously done his homework on Sutton.

Seriously though, Sutton deal aside, if we trade Volchenkov...and that's an IF...it will be a hockey deal players for players. There's no way murray takes picks for him. that being said, I say that if they can't come to a deal, then let him play out his contract (he'll probably be amazing ) and trade him at the draft if needed.

That was Brendan Witt.

Oh, now Volchenkov is absolutely not going anywhere. Those are the 8 D-men we're going with.

Phillips, Volchenkov, Kuba, Karlsson, Sutton, Carkner, Campoli, Lee.

Not too shabby. Andy Sutton to Ottawa! - Page 4 805406

Uh...he should be. NY isn't far from Ottawa by plane.

This could very well be a move to compensate for a Volchenkov trade. Both Sutton and Volch play very similar styles. Sutton is second in the league in blocked shots and is just as big a hitter as Volchenkov. As good as Volch is, is he really that much better than Sutton? Debatable. If Murray plans on re-signing Sutton it's probably because Volch wants $4.5 million +. I can see Karlsson being paired with Philips and Sutton with Kuba if Volchenkov gets traded for something other than a d-man...

Agreed. Acquiring Sutton signals that Murray is done. I sure hope this was the right move.

You'd be surprised. Trades tend to get announced well after they've been agreed upon and approved.

"We thank Andy Sutton for his time here," said Islanders general manager Garth Snow. " He's played really well for us, especially this year. He's gotten a few bad breaks regarding injuries [in the past] but he'll be missed not only on the ice but off the ice as... have to sign up to read the rest

Define 'right move'. Andy Sutton to Ottawa! - Page 4 270956

Seriously, I think it's a good move. This guy was on our radar as well, we always said he'd be perfect to play with Carkner or ever Kuba - and Clutch, the asking price for other players are ludicrous.

Look at Leopold and Sutton getting 2nds, that should go to show you what Hamhuis and guys like that are going for. I bet Seidenberg goes for a 1st - probably from SJ or a team like that. That was the guy I wanted to most - not with the 1st, but I wanted him real bad. Now we sit back and hope to heck we can win a couple of rounds!

my only beef with this trade is that we were willing to part with the 2nd rounder...why not use it for a seidenberg??

EDIT: thought that was the asking price, but I guess it must be way higher than that. Then again, Murray did give up a 1st for Campoli, so might have been on a little less crack this time around.

CRAP....well then let's see if he can handle the truck hit too! and then we'll test Heatley....when we find him.

Word is Seidenberg will cost a late 1st or a 2nd and a decent prospect. He's worth a lot more than Sutton.

Bulletin: Ottawa acquires Andy Sutton from the N.Y. Islanders for a second-round draft pick in 2010
Tuesday, 02.03.2010 / 1:58 PM / News
Ottawa Senators

OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today the club has acquired defenceman Andy Sutton from the New York Islanders in exchange for a second-round draft choice (acquired from the San Jose Sharks) in the 2010 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

Sutton, 34, is currently in his 11th NHL season and his third with the Islanders. In 54 games this season, he has scored four goals, while adding eight assists and 73 penalty minutes. The native of Kingston, Ont., has averaged 20:48 in time-on-ice per game this season and leads New York in both hits (155) and blocked shots (153). The 153 blocked shots are second most in the NHL.

In 567 career NHL games with San Jose, the Minnesota Wild, Atlanta Thrashers and the Islanders, Sutton has scored 34 goals, added 101 assists and 984 penalty minutes. He has played in four career playoff games, all with Atlanta in 2006-07.

The 6-foot-6, 245-pound Sutton was signed as an undrafted free agent by San Jose on March 20, 1998, before being traded to Minnesota on June 12, 2000, with a seventh-round draft pick in 2000 and a third-round pick in 2001 for the Wild’s eighth-round selection that same year. He was traded to Atlanta for Hnat Domenichelli on Jan. 22, 2002, and signed with the Islanders as a free agent on Aug. 10, 2007.

The second-round draft pick traded away by the Senators was acquired along with Milan Michalek and Jonathan Cheechoo from San Jose in exchange for forward Dany Heatley and Ottawa’s fifth-round draft choice in 2010 on Sept. 12, 2009.
