Is this a depth move for the minors or are they adding depth because they anticipate moving a roster defenseman?

Just depth in general I think. I wouldn't be surprised if they're gonna try to clear room for Kessel though. I don't know how...

Any word on Sturm? If he's still on the LTIR, then there is their room for Kessel.

Ask Rooney about that. I don't think it works that way (or so I just found out). But I wouldn't swear to that.

I'm not up to date on Sturm's situation, but I can tell you that a team does get cap relief for a player on LTIR.

The big misconception about the nature of that 'relief' is that the player's salary comes off the team's cap books. That's not the case. What happens is that the team in question is allowed to go over the cap by as much as the salary of the player on LTIR. It's a pretty meaningless distinction when you think about it, as the practical consequences are exactly the same, but there you have it.

There are all kinds of requirements to be met to place a player on LTIR. It's not something you can arrange out of convenience. And for players on regular old IR (which is injury list on which 98% of all injured players end up), there are no cap relief measures at all. That's why it's so important to have a lot of cap space in reserve for the year, to pay for the young kids you're calling up to replace the injured player in question. It is possible to run out of cap space and so not have enough money to make call ups to fill out a roster. It happened to Calgary just this year, I believe.

Okay thank Rooney. I thought there was something more to it, but that clears it up.

As a followup, there is no LTIR in the offseason. Teams can only go over the cap by 10% in the offseason. Of course no bonuses count towards that total either.

Sturm is injured? I wasn't aware of that. Howie picked him (and Amnesia's inherited him).
