Not this year anyway..I don't believe they have their 2nd or 3rd this year...wasn't that all part of the Kessel trade, or atleast the 2nd was...

Yeah, that's the latest train of thought... a 2nd rounder seems to be the buzz... although Millard was talking about Sopel and a 1st rounder on HC @ Noon today - he's on crack if he thinks Bowman will give up a 1st rounder to do that.

Of course there going to shop Sopel. If they don't have to move a real asset then they'll try that first.

A 2nd rounder...holy cow. May I be so bold as to ask why they don't just waive him? I know it's better to try to find a home for him, but that's too stiff a price IMO.

People who think they'll give us Barker for two fringe NHLers and a pick may need to re-think things. Why would Chicago bother unloading anyone when they can just waive Sopel and clear 2+ million going forward?

I would never give up my depth if I didn't have to.

Perhaps Stan doesn't like the optics of waiving a player. Not surprising, it's money down the drain. Waiving will be a last resort if he can't move Sopel (or whoever he needs to) via trade.

They also don't get to control where he goes if they waive him, and should he clear waivers then they would certainly be on the hook for 1/2 his salary when he's recalled. Maybe they don't or can't afford to even pay 1/2, and are concerned where he goes in the waiver process, whereas trading means they control where he goes...IE not nashville or Columbus..

From what I've seen watching the Hawks, combined with what I've read, he seems like a Picard 2.0. A guy who's maybe not much better defensively, but demands a ton of respect on the point - something that we don't have right now.

He's a top 5 overall pick as well, so there might be room for him to continue to develop as a defenseman, but I have a feeling a light's not gonna go off in his head and he'll instantly become better in his own zone.

Someone with more knowledge of the Hawks and Barker could probably shed more light.

Barker has tickled 50 points as an NHL D-man, Picard has not.

50 points SSF - that's...more than we've had since, what, Redden when he was good?

EDIT: It's 40 points he got - why did I think he got 50. Extrapolated perhaps? Shrug Yeah, maybe, he got those points in 68 games.

Agreed, this week will be Sopel's big chance to continue as an NHLer if I was betting.
