I was surprised that Smith got the start... I would have figured Niitymaki would have got it since he had 2 wins in a row after Smith lost the first three. Strange decision if you ask me.

And the Habs lost their 100th home opener to boot! Sweet.

Honestly the best hit of the night on Hedman was Spezza! I couldn't believe it, had to rub my eyes and double check the number.

Spezza threw a hit? On a guy bigger than he is? whoa GAME DAY: Tampa Bay Lightning @ Ottawa Senators - 7:30pm ET - Thu. Oct. 15th, 2009 - Page 18 598684 Things are looking up for this guy.

Edit: here is the video proof.

TSN's report says Shannon sat out with a suspected concussion.
http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=294955

Notes: The Senators are in Montreal on Saturday night.
It'll be Kovalev's first game there since leaving the Canadiens to sign
with Ottawa in the off-season. a Centres Peter Regin (upper body), Ryan Shannon (suspected concussion) and Jesse Winchester (knee) and defenceman Filip Kuba (lower body) all sat out with injuries.

Not surprising at all, he was playing like he had one. Sucks he has had so many concussion problems thus far in his career. Well, Regin is back in.

Is this for the game going forward or from last night, because I am pretty sure I saw Shannon manning the point on the PP. very strange indeed, come on TSN, get your facts straight.

That quote looks suspect... it says he sat out the game, but he was in the game last night.

I'm probably dreaming, right? 7 goals scored, come-uppance for Downey? I can't believe it. GAME DAY: Tampa Bay Lightning @ Ottawa Senators - 7:30pm ET - Thu. Oct. 15th, 2009 - Page 18 3872

Also, not sure if it just didn't show on those two plays, but how could Michalek's 2nd goal and Spezza's pass to set up his 3rd not HON candidates? Is the any Sens bias showing through again on TSN?

They have it, just not in the game hilites for some reason. Awsome pass. The announcer is saying that the goalie should have had that pass, but it's right between the defender's legs.

Nice to see ALL FOUR lines scoring last night.

When was the last time that happened?

Sweet.

quote from Carkner about Downie, I love it.

"Payback for McAmmond," Carkner said afterward. "I hate that little prick (Downie)."

Carkner is the best bang for the buck on the team right now.

and he certainly loves to throw the hits/fists out there, between him and A-Train, have two of the top D at crushing the opposition.

The nice thing about Carkner is he isnt out of control at all and is playing A LOT of mins for a guy people questioned could even play. He was a 2nd round pick back in the day for The Habs so he has tallent, hopefully he can stick around here in Ottawa and do what he's doing for a few more years.

Absolutely one of my favorite players on that team right now and he does provide a little offence!

I think someone forgot to proof-read that part. Shannon definitely played last night and I didn't hear a thing about him being taken out of the lineup either. Unless I read it somewhere else I chalk that up to a minor error on the part of TSN.ca.

Oh, for sure. I saw him in the first (I think) making a nifty move carrying the puck on a PP (putting on the brakes like he's going to set-up at the blue line then dishing a nice pass to a rushing winger). Sadly, that was the only nice play I saw from him (although I did not watch the third and most of the 2nd).

Great game all around.  Exactly what the doctor ordered.  But, aside from the first few minutes of the game and especially after the first MM shortie, Tampa looked flat.  I mean, our break out has been pretty solid but Tampa made it look like we were breaking out against pylons.Saturday should be a good game.  Montreal is going to be angry after the home opener loss.  It'll be a good test.

Scarlett Ice has a nice nickname for Carkner:
