It doesnt count because he is a european import thus he doesnt have the ability to go to Jr, so after 10 games and being sent down to the AHL it will not count against his ELC.

European players have a different set of rules.

Found the issue I missed....

Has everything to do with that age cut-off.

I got misconstrued because of the pointless posting of the "professional games", over read that piece.

Well I'm disappointed with myself, I knew this damn catch already because of following the Filatov situation in Columbus last year. Karlsson stays.....YAY - Page 5 489887

Repeat after me: ONLY NHL games count towards when a ELC will slide. Nothing else.

Karlsson isnt going anywhere anyways, so I think this is pointless. He has been improving every game, making smarter plays, harder plays, so on and on.

You're looking for progress and no one has come along more in the last 9 games then Karlsson. Boston he was really solid and played a realy smart game and did not look out of place at all against a very physical team.

If they send him down to Bingo, it's for the year, there is no calling him back up and there is no going back on this decision, at least if it's at the 10 game mark because they would be trying to add a year to his ELC. If he gets sent down at the 25-30 game mark then oh well, you lose a year of his ELC but he wont be a UFA any sooner.

Karlsson is playing well right now and he was actually supposed to really be brought along with Kuba but things didnt workout that way, and he has actually handled the transition fairly well playing with Campoli. They initial plan they had was thrown off course by Kuba's injury and Karlsson will be and is a better player for it.

Lets see what the kid can do with a perfect, seasoned vet as a partner. That's the only fair evaluation for Karlsson.

And you don't turn 20 before December 31 of that year.

Let me clarify what I meant... I don't think Jr. eligibility has anything to do with it, only age at signing of the first SPC. If the player was age 18 or 19 at signing of their first SPC, the ELC years can slide depending on how many NHL games they play as outlined inthe CBA Section 9.1. If the player is age 20 or 21, then their ELC is for three years and there is no option for it to slide. If the player is 22 or 23, their ELC is for 2 years with no option to slide. If the player is 24 years old, their ELC is for 1 year with no option to slide. If the player is 25 and older, they are not subject to ELC restrictions at signing.

A European Player who signs his first SPC at ages 25-27 has an ELC for 1 year, no option to slide. A European Player who signs at age 28 or older is not subject to ELC restrictions.

Bottom line: only 18 and 19 year old's have ELC's that can slide, and only NHL games count towards that factor.

Interesting. I wonder if wouldn't have been better for Karlsson to be sent back to Sweden or St. Mikes. John "The Know-It-All-Windbag" Rotenberg seems to think that going to Bingo will affect his UFA status down the road.

Does anyone know this for sure?

It's been confirmed that it won't burn a year of his contract if he plays in the AHL, however if he comes up to play 1 more NHL game, it counts as a year.

I was also asking about playoff games. Does anyone know for sure if a playoff game will count toward his 10 games?

According to the CBA, "NHL Games" means regular season and playoff games. So, playoff games would count. This is listed in Article 1.
