So is this it? We start the season with a 23 man roster? How long before 1 or 2 more players are moved? Do they wait for Winchester to get healthy before anymore moves are made?

Well, considering Winch is injured, I think Murray would start with a 23-man roster (including Winch) and then make a decision / move when Winch is healthy.

That's gonna be tough because it may likely affect some other player as it's not as simple as moving Regin out and Winchester in.

Hmmm...

Actually, it seems that by placing Winchester on the injured list, they can get down to a 23-man roster by waiving Schubert and sending Z. Smith down, which they have done.

So, in theory, they could sit on the roster they have now with Lee up.

The problem with staying at 23 is we have 1.7M in cap room IF we invoke the bonus cushion clause or whatever it's called.

I think Murray would prefer to be closer to 2M in space (Yes rooney you've converted me) without the bonus cushion being involved.

Hopefully Kelly raises his game since he knows that he's on the bubble. At some point during the season a team is going to find itself needing a solid third line centre. I still like Kelly, i just think he's been trumped by Regin. No room for him anymore unfortunately.

Yeah, I can see Murray wanting a bit more breathing room. With Regin down and Winch up in a 22-man roster configuration, you get your ~$2M cap relief but I suspect Murray will want to do it a different way and keep Regin up.

There is absolutely no reason not to give Regin at minimum 10 or so games to see where he's at in the regular season pace of game.

The more guys that Murray carries on the Sens that are two way deals and don't need to clear waivers the better. They can always be "sent down" during breaks of 3 or more days in the schedule to create more room.

which means one of the extra forwards pretty much have to be moved out, Kelly being the name that gets mentioned most, however, I don't see any takers for him.

If Regin doesn't play and Kelly gets his spot I will lose significant amounts of faith in the Senators' organization. There's loyalty to players, and then there's insanity.

This isn't uncommon though. Two way guys are often the victim of numbers. Bobby Ryan is a classic example, although that was for cap reasons. I agree though that Regin made this team with his play at camp. He deserves to be here, even if it means sitting someone else.

Indeed... if Murray can't make a trade to free up a space for Regin and he doesn't want to carry a 23-man roster... we're going to have too many guys and someone else will have to be sent down and that may involve the waiver wire.

I'd like to see Murray carry a 23-man roster to start and keep as many guys up as possible, making whoever he needs a healthy scratch to get the looks he needs to give those bubble guys a chance.

I don't envy being Murray right now...
