Assuming one of those teams always loses (not in regulation) that leaves 120 wins to divide among the remaining 4 teams. So that's 60 points for each team from wins. So as long as none of them win more than 11 games outside the division it is, indeed, mathematically possible.

11 more wins would put them in the playoffs due to the number of wins, no? In that case, it would be so long as they don't get more than 21 points out of their remaining games.

Per Bob McKenzie and Kuklas Korner today:

TSNBobMcKenzie Washington puts Michael Nylander on waivers.
13 minutes ago from mobile web

His salary cap hit is almost $4.9M and it runs thru the end of next season.

---

Nylander's been injured and he lost his spot in the Caps lineup, but if a team claims him on re-entry for half his salary, they could get a strong playmaking center.

Nylander was quite good with the Rangers, putting up seasons of 79 and 83 points, and 37 points in 40 games in his 1st season with the Capitals.

He has his weaknesses, but as an experienced 3rd line player or injury replacement for a Top 6, a potentially useful addition.

Someone would nab him on re-entry I would imagine, except I think he had another year left at 4.75 after this, so that's a serious issue.

Not necessarily.

A team claiming him at 2.375 for this year could choose to shop him in the offseason, waive him before next October 1 (which is when teams have to be under the 2010-11 cap) or buy him out.

Plus, you appear to be incorrect in stating his salary is 4.75 for next year, per NHLNumbers which has it listed as $3MM.

Look at the headaches it's causing Washington right now. That should show how hard it is to get rid of a massive contract like that, I'm not sure there are many teams who had 2.375 (who can afford it) in cap space - and fewer that have an extra 4.75 (you have to count it as part of your cap right now, even if you plan on buying him out).

League Factoid: The Canadiens have won 7 of their 8 wins in the SO. Is that a crazy stat to anyone else? I think its pretty remarkable.

That is pretty crazy... but considering it's only 5 min of OT... it's hard to get a good read on what that really means, other than they go to OT a lot.

@Spez>it's only a headache for the Caps because they are so squeezed for cap space; and they may need all they can get because Semin and Backstrom's contracts (among others) are up at the end of the year.

Semin's agent Mark Gandler is already talking about $6-7MM a year.

Nylander's contract becomes relatively affordable as a re-entry waiver claim for the reasons I stated.

So you're not talking about $4.75MM. You're talking 2.375 this year (at this point), and 3MM for just next year (assuming he is not bought out, which would mean his cap hit could be spread out). Not outrageous by any means for a center with his past production and experience.

6-7 for Semin sounds about right---given that we're now paying for potential. His output is somewhere over a ppg and he gives them a pair o' wingers that rival Pittsburgh's pair o' centers.

Can you do that Dave? I don't know the rule there, but I've never heard of that.

It also means that they lose a lot in regulation and that they are on the brink of losing almost every game. They could just as easily be 1-8-7, if not for the shootout.

Hopefully they don't accomplish what Edmonton couldn't a couple of years ago, and actually make it in to the playoffs on basically nothing but shootout victories.

actually, that comment had nothing to do with you. I was thinking about that stat since their first 8 games, where they either lost outright in regulation or won in a shootout. Then they beat the Isles in regulation and it was no longer as remarkable; however, the same pattern began immediately after that win. It really is an interesting stat.

Also, you're on record stating that you don't like Gainey and don't have high hopes for the Habs, so if anything, my comment could be viewed as inclusionary, rather than antagonistic.

I used it in the other thread to counter your "I can attack the Sens because of the Habs standing"...in this case, however, it had nothing to do with you.

According to the buyout examples that I have seen (Bertuzzi/ANA, Curtis Brown/CHI), yes.

But I don't pretend to be an expert in that area; whenever I consult the NHLCBA to verify the information, the language is so complex, it's enough to give you a migraine.

Gohan--I hear you, and you are correct I'm not Gainey fan and to be honest, the habs don't impress me right now with that lineup--in the end however, I've been a habs fan for a long time so my loyality it there. The bottom line is the habs have played a lot of soft teams right now--right now they are no threat for the cup. I don't like Gainey's style of hockey--i hate the habs lineup right now.

The only problem I have is that there are many posts I read and it sounds like the sens are the stanley cup champs and every other team is junk--to much biasm for me.
