Second case of the swine flu confirmed in the NHL. First it was Peter Budaj, now Ladislav Smid as well. Smid played 19 minutes despite the diagnose. Frankly, I'm a little surprised they ddin't keep him quarantined. This flu could knock out half a team in a hurry if they are not practicing hand washing with religious zeal. Expect more cases.

Simon Gagne has two small hernias in his groin and may require surgery.

Ryan O'Reilly - a guy we could have had with SJ's pick - has 10 points in 12 games and IMO looks like a bonafide NHLer. He's my pick so far in this VERY early season as Rookie of the Year.

I knew he was playing well, I didnt know he was producing at almost a PPG pace. That's not even what he's about, that kid has heart up the Donkey.

I said right when he was drafted by Colorado that The Avs might have just set themselves up for the future in a big way up front with those 2 guys.

Now I didnt expect The Avs to get off to this start but there is nothing like a hot goaltender to make a team with obvious defensive woes look like a top tier team. At some point that team is going to hit a wall though, I'm pretty sure of that.

Def onside with you about O'Reilly being the ROTY front runner right now. Im not sure if there has ever been anyone drafted outside of the 1st round, come in and make the team out of the draft and win ROTY... someone should go look that up.

I remember, you were really high on this kid before and during the draft. Your enthusiasm forced me to do research. I hate research.

But seriously, maybe you have a little scout in you.

Can you imagine if I was hired as a scout. I'd have about 25 guys from here as part of my 'team'. It would be so much fun. Damn... PS I responded to your post on Zubov in the Regin thread. I definitely didn't arbitrarily call him fat and lazy...

Gaborik to miss tonight's game. Rangers INSIST it's not his hip or groin, but won't say what it is (assumed to be a right leg injury).

Alfie came close. He was drafted in '94 (5th round) but didn't play until '95, when he won ROTY.

I checked all the way back to the '60s and none of the players had draft years listed in Wikipedia -- I guess at some point there was something other than an amateur draft -- were player simply selected by region?

Anyhow, there isn't a single player who was drafted outside of the first round to win the Calder in the same season when they were drafted. There were a couple that were outside of the top 10 and some were pretty darn close. For example, Bossy was 15th overall in an 18-team league.

Well, if O'Reilly does win it, there is a trivia question not a lot will know the answer to in 10-15 years.

He also managed to win the Calder the very same year. Quite a feat.

Did he also lead the team in scoring? I believe he did.

Well, Karlsson could top that by winning the Calder two years in a row !!!

Yeah, Alfie led the Sens in scoring because Yashin sat out.

Too bad that great year was eclipsed by Pat Elyniuk's +2 campaign.
