So what do you do? Put Picard on waivers? Waive or trade Schubie and keep Picard as the 7th?

You ride with 7 of them and Schubie is already gone in my books...

I wonder if BM can trade him for a 3rd or 4th...that would be a good return.

Schubert for a 3rd or 4th? No shot. At very best, a 5th rounder, more likely a 6th.

Brian has less than 60 regular season games under his belt and he is already thrown under the bus... Yet he still played 18-20 minutes the last 2-3 months of the season paired with Philips and it was easily our best tandem when Kuba was injured.
I obviously think Karlsson will be better but it doesn't mean Brian Lee should be thrown under the bus in favour of 2 players who clearly, haven't proven anything more than him at the NHL level.

I would absolutly say that Picard has shown he is a much better offensive player then Lee... It's not even close.

Sure, but at the moment, if you have Campoli and Kuba on the roster, I'd rather have a last pairing with a more well positionned defenseman with Karlsson (if he's in), which Lee is over Picard IMO. The other reason is, I think Brian Lee needs as much ice time as we can give him to develop properly.

Bottom line, I'm not giving up on a Defenseman who has 60- games under his belt and has showed signs of good poise.

You're only 2 right handed shots on the 3rd pairing? One of the two has to learn to play his opposite side without either having anything close to a full season under thier belt. Wont work. That's another reason a Picard/Karlsson is a lot more likely.

Totally forgot about the shots. In this case, the lines must be reshuffled, I'll leave that to the line specialists. Brian Lee played with Philips at the end of last year, could very well be the same this year.

That basically puts Campoli on the 3rd pairing when he showed so good chemistry with Kuba last year... dont know if you do that.

Basically, what happens is Lee has to play himself onto the team, Karlsson has to play himself off of it. I think Picard will be there if he isnt traded. Also almost 1/2 the cap hit of Lee.

The competition for spots on our D is going to be fierce.

Incumbents Phillips, Volchenkov and Kuba are locks for the top 4. Most likely Campoli as the fourth but Picard, Lee, Schubert, Karlsson or anyone new will be a nice battle for 5 and 6.

I think we are not giving Lee enough credit here. He will do a lot better under a more structured coach. He did very well under Murray. Not so well under Hartsburg (who took out his frustrations on the bottom half of the roster) and Paddock (who he didn't play for that much). There has been too much turmoil in his brief time here to get a good read on the kid IMO.

You don't think a team like San Jose that can't afford to ice a full team would pay a little extra for a utility man?

No shot, way better options if that;s the price. There are other players like Schubert out there.

Fair enough. I don't know enough about what picks go for when they're traded straight up for a player.

Auld got a 6th... he is a qaulity backup and can play for stretches. Schubert is a 6th D man at best with tons around the league.

@Spader> where do you get the notion that SJ can't afford to ice a full team? CapGeek.com has them at 22 players with almost a million left in cap room.

Schubert might be of interest (but so might Anton Babchuk, Dennis Seidenberg or Marc Andre Bergeron). As N4L says, Schubie doesn't have much market value. It being the last year of his contract, he should be motivated though...which could be good for the Sens.

IMHO Karlsson has the talent to push for a Top 4 spot. He could prove Ottawa's equivalent to Luke Schenn and what he did last year, in terms of his impact on his own team's roster.

Wasn't Corvo on the 3rd pairing with Preissing during the cup run?
I don't know if my memory is good but I think it was like:

Philips - VOlchenkov
REdden - Meszaros
Corvo - Preissing

Corvo still got to play 1st PP UNit.

How is Babchuk unsigned?? The guy put up something like 15 points over his last 25 games and has an absolutely howitzer. Granted he was a bust in the playoffs, but wow....
