He's reportedly asking for a long-term deal at $5.5M/season. It's gonna be tough for him to get that.
Could he have taken the Bruins to arbitration since he's an RFA?

I believe that an RFA only has arbitration rights, if they are still RFA status but not in their entry level deal. In other words, somewhere in years 4-6. I am also under the impression that a player can only ever be eligible once for arbitration.
I'm not positive, but this is what I understand.

When you sign a contract, that begins the countdown, right?
So it doesn't matter where Karlsson plays this year, even if it's Sweden, he'll burn a year off his contract.
Interesting stuff.

Are you sure... What was it with Schenn or any other rookie who only play's 10 games and then get's sent down... Is that to not burn a year of the contract or is that for UFA status...

Oh yeah....good call, tough question. I see that O'Brien still has 3 years left on his ELC, so maybe you're right.
Gosh, that would be great (for Karlsson).
Now I'm confused. :^^^^:

We only lose a year on Karlsson's EL contract if he plays in the NHL or the AHL. Going back to Sweden we don't lose that year. This is why I'm not a fan of him being here this year. I'd rather have a more seasoned, bigger, Karlsson for his 3 EL years.

I feel like I've been saying this for a while now. We absolutely need Karlsson to get another year in the SEL. Or preferably the AHL, but I'll take the SEL on Frolunda, leading the team in minutes, getting experience, learning more about the defensive zone, strength, conditioning etc.
People have to understand that D-men take a long, long time to mature into minute eating, top pairing guys. Kronwall is 25 and he's hitting his stride. 6 years from where Karlsson is. Karlsson's pedigree is higher, but he himself compared them, so we're looking at a couple of years minimum before he contributes regularly.
One year in the SEL, a solid training camp and perhaps 20 games in the AHL and THEN Karlsson can take his first shot at being a full-time D-man. Before that and we're in jeopardy of trying to teach him on the fly at the NHL level - which can lead to disaster and confidence issues.
If this guy wasn't so important to us, I'd say whatever, but he's (one of) our franchise D-men. As for Cowen, I think he can think about jumping to the AHL next year - or bypassing that completely and joining Karlsson in the NHL next year (again though, a 20 game AHL stint never hurt anyone).
Wiercioch is the guy that I feel might be 3 years away.

Agreed with all of this, although I'd like to see Wiercioch in the show in two years. From the time we drafted him up to now, he's made some tremendous strides, so if he continues at that pace, 2 years isn't unreasonable. I don't want to rush any of these 3. It's not like we are contending for the cup this year, or possibly next anyway.
