meh, forget Xbox, get a PS3, 299 and you get a blu ray player too, best bang for you buck.

I don't need the BR, this is for upstairs in our room, so I can chill out on weekends or late at night and play some NHL2010. I need nothing but the standard system and something that'll save my progress, so I think I might be okay with the littler unit.

However, yes, I agree, I'm a Sony man, but man, I just wanna play some games. What video game are you playing? - Page 15 805406

Definitely true. It'll sit atop a bookcase.

Careful though, those aren't the only things you download online. There are always roster updates, (granted which are only 2 MB ish) and downloadable content from other games (i.e. Map Pack for Call of Duty). Also some games require you to install further content from the disk itself (Metal Gear Solid 4 was like that, albeit for PS3).

Another option though, at least i know you can do it with PS3, is to swap out the console's Harddrive and putting in a new internal one. Then you can also put music on it, and it becomes an entertainment unit for your bedroom. A little Barry White, a little Tay Zonday ( What video game are you playing? - Page 15 159628 ) and you're set.

Yeah, I thought about the roster updates. That would be the pain in the arse of it all.

Movies are like 30+ bucks (less for some, more for others), but a low-grade BR player is 60-80 and up if you want all the bells and whistles. The big mistake was charging so much for them back when they first came out. I remember everyone just shaking their heads and laughing. No one was gonna pay that for another new DVD system, no matter how nice it looked.

Sony Fan Boy!

Not that I think highly of Microsoft, but Sony sucks. If not for them, HD-DVD would have $99 3rd gen players and movies for under $25 by now. Am I still bitter? Not as bitter as I would have been if I'd actually bought a player, but bitter enough that I still don't have a BR player. Not buying anything until Boxing day at the earliest. And I won't be buying any movies until they come way, way down in price. I've seen some deals 2 for $20. Now, if I can get that for some of my old favorites, yeah, I'll upgrade my collection. No way I'll be spending $30+ for new releases of crappy remakes.

Trust me, if you can find a BR player for $80 you don't want to buy it.

I've been monitoring prices and they are getting better. I also keep checking shopbot.ca. Recently a new US-based e-tailer started showing up with very good prices (BHPhotovideo.com). They ship direct to Canada, too. For example, the Sony BDP-S560 is currently selling for $350 at Future Shop (that's with a $50 off sale). Same player is $251 CAD plus $40.65 shipping. That's the 2-4 day delivery using UPS. Although I would very carefully ask about duties and any other fees. You might be better off going with the International Priority (7-10 days, USPS) which, for some odd reason coasts $15 more. The brokerage fees (if any) will be lower, I believe.

Hmm, I wonder if FS will price-match?

I don't know if I've mentionned it, but I just finished Uncharted ...

Holy fuuuuuck What video game are you playing? - Page 15 805406 Best game I've ever played hands down. Best graphics I've ever seen in a game (and my PC is quite the powerhouse, that's saying a lot). The story is amazing, it's like playing "IJ: THe Last Crusade". Voice acting top notch, lightning, animations. Really, I think Naughty Dog is ahead of the competition, they have mastered the PS3 at the point where I think no XBOX 360 game will ever be this good.

On the BR question, I usually buy my movies on amazon.COM, and I pay around 15$ US for some amazing movies (Lately, I've bought GOod, Bad Ugly, Silence of the Lambs at that price). I'm also starting to have a pretty cool collection of tv shows.

Check out DVDPriceSearch.com. Amazon.com has some nice sales (especially their gold-box promotions) but if you are looking for something specific, this site will find you the best price.

Of course not all of them will ship to Canada. Amazon hiked their shipping rates -- free in the US, $8 (or is it $9 now) to Canada, and $3 for each additional item. Highway robbery.

If I ever find an online store that ships for free to Canada, I'll spread the word.

For sure, but for 80 bucks you can get a BR that'll last a little while until the prices continue down on the top end ones. If you're desperate that is - which I'm not at all personally.

I usually buy 4 or 5 blu rays each time on Amazon.com, so the shipping is usually pretty low. Same for taxes. When I compare to prices at Best Buy or Amazon.ca, I usually save around 20$.
For example, one of my purchase a few weeks ago:

http://www.amazon.ca/Generation-Kill-Blu-ray/dp/B002612SA6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1256162368&sr=8-3-spell

http://www.amazon.com/Generation-Kill-Blu-ray-Alexander-Skarsg%C3%A5rd/dp/B001IFZL50/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1256162354&sr=8-2

25$ difference, I add the 10$ shipping + Import fees (to adjust the currency, usually 5$) so for this one I saved 10$.

EDIT: Thanx for the link.

See the post above, I save 10$ even with free shipping from amazon.ca

EDIT: Actually, I save 10$ + the GST/PST

Well the GST/PST is touch and go. Usually anything under $40 just sails through, but anything over that you will sometimes get it going through the brokers. Then they collect the GST/PST on behalf of the government, and add their own fee for collecting it (plus GST on the fee). That just burns me to no end.

1. They are collecting for the government -- why am *I* charged the brokerage fee?

2. How does Ontario (or any other province) have the balls to charge an Ontario sales tax on a sale that takes place on US soil?

Anyhow, I think that even $3 shipping fee (for items 2 and up) is too high.
