I friggin love the deal and I think the impact will be pretty big. With Ortiz in the twilight of his career, they needed an elite home run and run producer. Gonzalez is probably the best hitter they've had since Manny was traded (and they've really lacked mojo in the lineup since then). He averaged 32 home runs and 100 RBI in one of the worst ballparks in the league for hitters (it's ridiculous how huge the demensions are at Petco). Now he's playing in a park that has the Green Monster and the Pesky Pole, so he has the opportunity to rack up a lot more hits and get some cheap home runs here and there. If Ellsbury and Pedroia return to form as #1 and #2 hitters and get on base a lot, RBI's will come easy for Gonzalez. Is it stupid to think he will get more than his career high of 40 HR and 119 RBI that he had in 2009? I'm not sure.

Youkilis now moves over to third so I don't losing Beltre is too tough...losing Martinez hurts though. Saltalamacchia is definately not as good.

Apparently they are interested in signing Russell Martin, trading for Jose Reyes, and still even trying to sign Crawford. It will be interesting to see if they can get acquire any of those 3 guys (it would obviously make them an even better team). I wish they signed Jayson Werth, but nobody was stupid enough to give him the $$$ that Washington did.

Don't lie now Big Ev: the Jays should be the team the BoSox are most scared about in 2-3 years. If they're not - they will be.

Can we just merge organizations so we can own the Yankees every year?

Also on the Red Sox side is the fact that Lackey, Dice-K, Beckett and Papelbon had "off" years last year and will likely have bounce back years(by off years I mean relative to their previous years). They will add some more relief pitchers including perhaps Downs. Plus they will evaluate catching, I'm not sure that they expect Salty and Varitek to handle the 162 games.

Also with free agents Beltre(Type A) and Martinez(Type A) and Lopez(Type B) signing else where, they could pick up 5 additional draft picks in the first and supplemental round. Talk about re-stocking the farm. They will not be scared to sign Downs(Type A) and give up their first rounder.

Yikes, Red Sox strike again - Carl Crawford to a 7 year/142 million $$ deal. Lots of money, but Crawford is a hell of a player.

Cliff Lee will for sure go to the Yankees now - they'll be pissed that the BoSox have been so active.

Give them the pennant, Crawford and Gonzales. Even if NY gets Cliff Lee, I still give edge to Boston.

The Yanks will do whatever they have to to get Lee now. Joy.

I hope he sticks with the Rangers, he is a greaft fit on that team...although I wouldn't mind him going to the Yanks, it would just add to the rivalry.
