Emery loses in debut -- but you've got to see the god-awful pre-game spectacle they put on. The host team is "Spartak" so they've got a Spartan, just like we did at last year's first playoff game, except they've got him twirling on wires suspended above the ice. This totally takes away the embarrassment and humiliation I've felt for the past five months.

Oh, and there were 3,200 people in attendance. The game was in Moscow, a city with a population above 10 million.

Were they trying to make him feel like he fit in, or what? Christ, I can't understand how these Russian leagues are going to survive paying through the face for established NHL players.

Couldn't blame him for the OT goal -- they were shorthanded (4 on 3) and it was a beauty of a seeing-eye pass through a couple of pairs of legs to the guy perched at the corner of the crease. But it was not good hockey (I don't care *what* the announcers were saying, they are paid to talk it up). Sure, it was exciting (Atlant actually led 3-1 and 4-2, then fell behind 5-4 and tied it up with 1-1/2 minutes left in regulation), but it was not good hockey.

I followed a few links to look around and attendance at some games was as low as 1600. I think the total attendance after 16 games was something like 58K, which means that the 3200 at the Spartak game was pretty close to the league average.

Any chance this league will fold before training camp and pre-season finishes up here?

Well no, you gotta expect that. 90% of the world's elite players play in the NHL.. so the league is mostly young europeans or 2nd tier players. But I'm sure Emery will be able to buy some more shoes with his pay cheques.
