Well if he's as selfish as some have said then it makes sense right? How is he supposed to pad his stats next to a guy like Smith?

There's no question we won this trade. Every expert the past few days has said Meszaros is not even close to being that good. Don't

I know he's not worth what we got back, but...man...

Maybe Murray should've just shut his trap about this, but I feel like we all had a right to know that the main setback was his pairing partner.
Aren't you glad to know what in fact went down. Meszaros now reminds me of a Yashin but with only half the talent. Meszaros will get eaten alive as their #1 defenceman, just wait and see.

You know something caught my attention in the article and I've been wondering about it, but how did Meszaros know who his partner was going to be on D and why did everyone assume it was going to be Jason Smith? Isn't it the coach's job to determine line combinations and defensive pairings?

This makes me believe that maybe money wasn't the sole hold up in this contract negotiation. Maybe he wanted guarantees of playing time, pairings, etc.....

Me? Absolutely! Mez is a deadman as TB's top D-man with Ranger. Both of them are gonna be arse slammed by big, bruising opponents. People can say what they want about Redden (I think he sucked the last 2 years), but he's a **** of a lot better than Ranger will ever be.

Murray said a while back that he expected Mesz would play with Smith, whether he was overstepping his bounds or this is what he gathered from conversations with Hartsburgh is not known to me anyway but, that is what I remember Murray stating some time ago.

That's pretty odd to be honest. That would have made the pairings (pre-trade):

Phillips-Volchenkov
Smith-Meszaros
Lee-Schubert/Nycholat

Those pairings kind of suck, no? We all know the defensive play Phillips and Volchenkov bring, but they provide zero offense, Smith and Meszaros is a weird pairing and putting two very inexperienced players together on the bottom pairing is screaming for trouble.

Odd, but he said it on several times that Mez would be with and would learn from Smith.

Meszaros is a dink

Well, I suppose that's all irrelevant now, huh?

Ideally, Phillips should be playing against the opposing top lines most of the time, so it might be too much for Lee to be paired with him full time. Kuba has been playing top line minutes the last few years, so he could fit in real well with Phillips.

I could see them putting Phillips and Volchenkov together for the PK. The 2nd pairing could be Smith and Kuba/Schubert?!? Not bad at all.

Anyone have any ideas on who could play the back end on the PP? I figure Alfie/Kuba, and Lee/Schubert, or some combination of those four players.
This is sort of off-topic, but its related to lines/pairings.
In the past couple days, I've been watching the Sens-Sabres 2007 ECF on the NHLNetwork and I have to say: We MUST split up the CASH line and Philchenkov. Its really interesting watching the old series from the 20-20 vantage and it seems like to me that the CASH line is too easily exposed on the defensive end. Their +/- may be alright, but if they don't have the puck, they give up quality scoring chances on almost every shift.
Imo, they should only be reunited for PP's and Phillips and Volchenkov should only be reunited for Pk's...just my 2 cents.
