That was my understanding too. They can waive him all they want but they'll still have to pay him if no one picks him up. If they assign him to the AHL, his salary comes off the cap, but they still gotta pay.asq2 wrote:A thousand times no.
My question for those more knowledgeable on the CBA (rooneypoo) is: are you sure they'd only be on for half of the contract if they claimed him off re-entry waivers?
I was under the (quite possibly false) impression that they'd have to pay the full $6.5 million every season after the one in which they claimed him.
And if they buy him out, there will also be a cap hit of some sort like we had with Emery.
It seems crazy to be thinking about waiving or even buying out someone in the first year of their 6.5 x 6 year contract.
