My question for those more knowledgeable on the CBA (rooneypoo) is: are you sure they'd only be on for half of the contract if they claimed him off re-entry waivers?

I was under the (quite possibly false) impression that they'd have to pay the full $6.5 million every season after the one in which they claimed him.
That was my understanding too. They can waive him all they want but they'll still have to pay him if no one picks him up. If they assign him to the AHL, his salary comes off the cap, but they still gotta pay.

And if they buy him out, there will also be a cap hit of some sort like we had with Emery.

It seems crazy to be thinking about waiving or even buying out someone in the first year of their 6.5 x 6 year contract.

Teams are only on the hook for half the salary in the first year of a contract that gets claimed off of re-entry waivers. After that first year (ie. the year he gets waived) the claiming team is responsible for the full amount for the duration of the contract.

You'd be better off unloading the contract on someone who needs to ship out massive salary themselves.

Desperate times. Has there ever been such a unfavourable suck:pay ratio in the history of the NHL?

People said he was the scape goat here in Ottawa too... not quite. If he goes on re-entry waivers you can almost bet Florida picks him up and then gets rid of J Bo. Thats my guess as to what will happen.

Without a doubt will go down as the worst contract in league history (for now I suppose).

Worst back-to-back contracts?

Wink

Heh heh.

Just a question here: If you had to pick either Redden or Kuba @ $3M, who would you pick?

They are different players who play different offensive and defensive games but there are some general similarities.

They're both soft in their own way. Kuba has size but doesn't hit. Redden does hit more often but it's dead obvious when a Redden gaffe leads to a goal against.

They're both offensive d men. Redden has always been thought of as more offensive, but Kuba is outscoring him this year.

If I HAVE to pick one I'll take Kuba, but only because of the numbers he's put up this year. (He's still our leading +/_ player).

Kuba is a better D man, no question. Might be soft but he is extremely smart with and without the puck and isnt too bad offensivly. Redden isnt even in the top 1/2 of D men in this league anymore, he is awful. People can look at the stats all they want with him, its actually worse than the stats say. He is just brutal.

I said sure. He'd have a lot to prove and we could still waive him if it didn't work out. Surely, someone would grab him off re-reentry waivers for $1.625 Smile

It is 50% of the remaining contract amounts. Therefore the Rags would be on the hook for 3.25 each of the next 5 years.

I mis-read asq2's original post and was only thinking of waivers on the way down, not re-entry waivers.

The 50% of the rest of the contract is also my understanding for re-entry waivers.

No, I'm pretty sure it's half of the salary cap hit and half of the salary, over the course of the full contract. It's been such a big issue with Avery's anticipated return to the Rangers, which I've been following closely -- I'm a fantasy hockey addict and I'm sitting on Avery in most of my pools, praying for a comeback and a return to his point/PIM/SOG-producing ways!

This thread is a joke right? Bring back Redden? I posted a stat recently about how he's got 1 PP point in the past 30+ games. And that was an assist. On top of that, his defensive game is even worse than it was in Ottawa.

Seriously, this idea is better saved for April 1st.

LOL. Agreed 100%. He's not our problem anymore, enjoy Rangers fans!

Murray-is-a-genius conspiracy theory #382: knowing back in July 2008 that we'd be where we are in the standings in Feb. 2009 comparative to NYR, Murray purposely let Redden walk so that NYR would sign him, thus effectively lobbing a grenade into the Rangers' locker room, derailing their team, and securing a playoff spot for the Sens all in one fell swoop. Murray, you're an evil genius, you!

:lol!:

Noone needs to lob any grenades in that locker room. Sather is an IED that's gone off there already. I snicker every time I think of their cap situation for years to come. Have fun with that, whomever takes over once the long overdue firing of Sather happens. Milbury is an upgrade over what Sather has done in NY, no joke.

Wade was being booed on the power play just now. Off-target passes and not keeping easy pucks in the zone are the reasons.

I wonder if callers to the NYR post-game show will admonish his fellow fans for booing "Wayne" and reminding folks of his "community service" like I would hear on the Team 1200 when people finally caught on to his act.
