Looks like he's pretty excited to be here, and sounds like he feels he has something to prove.
I did get a chance to talk with Jonathan Cheechoo on my way to
Sharks Ice. He said he learned of the trade after taking his physical
this morning at training camp. His reaction?
“It was great to be a part of this organization, but at the same
time I’m kind of looking forward to this new chapter and I’m sure
everyone back home will be excited because I’m a little closer,”
Cheechoo said.
Ottawa and Toronto are equidistant from Moose Factory, he said, in case you were wondering.
On the trade: “The Sharks are making a decision they think will help
the team and so is Ottawa. We’ve just got to go out and do our jobs and
I’m looking forward to the next season. I put in a good summer of
training and I’m excited.
Cheechoo said his wife Ashley was on a plane to Los Angeles to
attend a wedding and still hadn’t heard about the trade at that time.
She’s from San Jose, but last summer’s trade rumors should prepare her
for what’s happened, he added. Regardless of the trade, the two plan to
make San Jose their permanent home.
Cheechoo said he expects to head north in the next day or two. Milan Michalek may take a little longer to show up.
“I talked to Milan. He’s got a little different story. I think he’s
waiting for a visa, too, so he’s going to be here a little bit longer,
maybe a week,” Cheechoo said.
More on the trade: “It was a little bit of a shock, but you look at
it as a great opportunity go out and prove I can still do what I can
do.”
“It’s a no-brainer for them (the Sharks). That’s somebody they
targeted and you’re going to have to give up things to get things. To
be part of that deal, I’ve got to go to Ottawa and show them they
didn’t make a wrong choice.”
