Renney should be next.

The way their game is going tonight, might be Carbonneau.

Scotty Bowman's players hated him too. Didn't stop Scotty from winning more Stanley Cups than any other coach.

And the first thing Cory Clouston said was that he wasn't there to be the players' friend.

IMHO Spector has it nailed. The Pens lost too many core and supporting players. Therrien paid for Shero's decisions.

Hated him for sure, 100%, and there are a lot of guys in there that hate Crosby too.

There have been questions about Carbo's coaching among the francophone hockey mavens (including Fournier, Dube, Pedneault, Demers, Bergeron, Langevin, Villeneuve, Tremblay) in Montreal ever since he was hired.

Missing the playoffs in his first year, Carbo got a pass for taking the Habs to the Conference title in his second; but as the Canadiens stumbled in the playoffs, the spotlight was turned on Guy.

Montreal's inconsistency this year has been accompanied by some furious debate over whether or not Guy Carbonneau is the man for the job. However, Bob Gainey has stated that Carbo was the best choice he had made as Habs' GM.

But...nothing is set in stone when it comes to being Coach of Le Club de Hockey Canadien. No coach has lasted longer than three seasons since Pat Burns left after the 1992 campaign; Burns lasted four. You would then have to go back to Scotty Bowman in 1979 to find another coach who lasted three seasons or more.

So if the trend continues, Guy Carbonneau's third season could very well be his final season.

This is long overdue. They had tuned him out completely and as others have pointed out, the Pens' lineup is a shadow of what it once was.

Renney and Carbo are next. I'm half expecting to hear Carbo's done tomorrow. The Habs look clueless.

Habs have lost 10 of their last 13 games and are free falling in the standings. Wow. What is going on there?

This was my take on the situation back on January 9th.

FINALLY!!

I've been calling for this move for a LONG time now. Therrien is in over his head. PEriod.
Now, that being said, he's obviously paying for Shero's blunders, one of specifically the blowing-of-his-load to land Hossa and then let him walk...

Shero has a LOT of decisions to make, and don't be surprised if you see Pat Quinn behind the Pens bench VERY soon, just in time to push for a post-season surge!

ESPN's Scott Burnside has a rather scathing view of the Penguins' firing of Michel Therrien.

Here's an excerpt and link:

Firing Therrien was easy out for Pens
by Scott Burnside ESPN.com, February 16, 2009

So much for loyalty.

So much for the plan.

So much for not taking the easy way out.

Just 57 games after Michel Therrien was feted for coaching the Pittsburgh Penguins to their first Stanley Cup finals since 1992, he was tossed under the coaching bus by the underachieving Penguins on Sunday. He became the third coach that either reached the Cup finals or won it all to be fired since the end of last season (Tampa Bay fired John Tortorella and Carolina dismissed Peter Laviolette).

Whatever the Penguins had failed to do this season -- and that list is long and mostly bleak -- Therrien deserved better than this.

More here:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/story?columnist=burnside_scott&id=3910141

There are reasons why coaches have short shelf lives, and age prematurely. The pressure on them to win is, in many cases, unrelenting.

You have to wonder why GMs and fans think firing a coach is a 'quick fix'. But as they say, that's the business.

You look at Buffalo with Lindy Ruff, Minnesota with Jacques Lemaire and Nashville with Barry Trotz. They've been in their jobs a relatively long time. Would their teams have been made better by firing them? Instead, one hears about how these coaches have overachieved with changes and gaps in personnel.

Why didn't Therrien get the chance to work through a situation where he didn't have the players to make it all happen? He's the one who took them from the bottom to the top in the first place.

As far as the 'what's he won?' cliche goes, there is only one team that has won the Stanley Cup more than once in this decade--Detroit--and only one coach who has won the Cup more than once in the last fifteen years--Scotty Bowman.

Bowman is legendary for being hated by his players. From what I have read about Bowman, he makes Therrien look like a sunny vacation.

Aaron Ward's stories about Bowman can be found here:
http://www.ottawacitizen.com/Sports/amazing+tale+Bruins+boisterous/1263409/story.html
From the story:

A certain legend named Scotty Bowman decided Ward would be his whipping boy. And man, could Scotty whip. In fact, for years Ward thought his middle name was "freaking" (or a cousin of that word), because all he ever heard was "Aaron Freaking Ward." "Scotty was very effective because he would strike fear in the hearts of his players by using some guys as examples. Most of the time, I was that example," Ward says. The Scotty stories are plentiful, and sadly, unrepeatable in a newspaper.

And regarding players liking or hating coaches--or as the fashionable phrase goes, 'tuning them out', doesn't being paid enormous amounts of money preclude the right to having your personal emotions get in the way of doing your job to the best of your ability?

Speaking of Scotty Bowman, The Name Dropper made some cryptic comments that almost sounded like he had a hand in firing Therrien... Weird.

Yes I am. He was saying something about not being able to breach confidence regarding Pittsburgh and that he was on the phone for several hours on Sunday night.

McGuire is charting the course of NHL franchises from the shadows now. He's like a one-man Bilderberg Group.

I'm metally challenged searching this site to find an old post, but I did say the Penguins would implode and likely miss the playoffs. I also predicted that Carey Price would pull a "Raycroft"

You mean when we all predicted the East and the standings? I'll conjure that up, I bet it's neat to see what we all wrote.

I think so. I can't remember what I had for breakfast, but somehow I can remember what I wrote in a forum 6 months ago - lol
