Yeah, and they will be counting heavily on him once Sakic is done after the year is up.

'tis a lot of coin, though.
Can he handle the expectations? Essentially, he becomes the go-to guy from here-on in. There will only be one or two others on the team making that much

If I match this deal, it counts starting next year?

Insane. I know it's been said many times, but the second (and sometimes third) contract is gone out the window. Guys come off their entry-level contract and get the big bucks.

The rules aren't clear yet, but in the scenario of proposed rules: yes.

As the owner of Statsny you would have the following options:

1. Match the contract and it takes effect next year, just as his real contract. It has the same cap hit and length as Statsny's deal.
2. You can trade him, and any other GM could sign the extension.
3. You can let him walk as a free agent, and anyone could match the extension and/or bid to increase the salary for his services. If he is an RFA you would be compensated as though the offers were in the form of an offer sheet. If not, you would receive no compensation as the owner.
4. If no one claims him at that salary, you can start bidding on him (same length, different salary). You are eligible to make bids as though the player were an unsigned UFA (only difference is the length of the new offers must match that of his current deal).

Again, the rules haven't been finalized and are still a topic of debate. These are just my suggestions at this point.
