The Columbus Blue Jackets have locked up one of their key up-and-coming players. The team announced on Friday that they have signed Derick Brassard to a four-year contract extension. The 21-year old will earn $13 million over the duration of the deal, which begins in 2010-11.
Brassard had 10 goals and 15 assists in 31 games last season before the rookie suffered a shoulder injury in December that required surgery and sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Last October he was the NHL Rookie of the Month after posting nine points in his first 10 games.
"We are pleased to have Derick under contract for the next five years," said Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson in a press release. "Derick's determination, passion and talent make us believe he will be an important part of our team in the coming years."
Brassard was Columbus' first pick (6th overall) in the 2006 draft.
