why can't this team kill penalties anymore?  Literally moments away and karlsson can't handle a faceoff win.  That one's on him.

EDIT: more importantly, why can't this team stop taking so many penalties?

Down 2-0 after 1 period. Hammond's looking kinda weak on all goals, and our forwards are not helping out clearing the puck out of our zone. OH and we keep taking penalties.

This might be the start of a long slump if they don't get their Dung together. Next two games are back to backs in chicago and st. louis.

People always like to Wing Dang Doodle about Anderson, but he's really awesome. Anyway, this will really hurt if we can't get at least a point out of this one. Need a goal before the end of the 2nd here.

McCormick is a keeper, and should be in the lineup over Pageau, Chiaroscuro, and Lazar at this point.

People also like to overrate Anderson. Last year he was great, this year he has been good

Go figure, we finally outshoot a team handily and get shutout in our own barn. Not in playoff position any longer.

I sincerely hope they work on their special teams the next few practices. Chicago and St louis followed by Boston again. Doesn't get any easier.

Claesson had better first game in the league than cowen has had all year. Laugh or cry?

I've said for the past 2 years that Claesson is really good. He's what we need on the 2nd D pairing, with BoroCop on the 3rd.

Exaggerate much?

Claesson was not on for any of the goals -- for a stay-at-home defenseman that's not a bad first game. He did not have any hits or blocked shots and had 1 shot on goal. 16 seconds of PP time and zero PK. Those stats are a bit surprising given his role and resume.

Well, that's it for the year. Skills Competition today -- my son will be there with Rogers Community cable, operating one of the cameras I guess. I'll tell him to bring his skates Smile

I heard him saying he's waited 4 years to get an NHL game. Sickening when you consider the free ride a couple of these guys have gotten.

How many games did Cowen play?  He came in late when they won the Calder Cup (played several of the playoff games).  Then he only played 3 games before his lookhip surgery.  So (just checked) 10 playoff games but then only 3 regular season games.  And now he's making $3.7M while being scratched in favor of an AHL callup.  There's no way they pay him $4.5M next year.  He's going to be waived then bought out.  I doubt anyone will want to take a chance on him at that amount.

How much salary can the Sens retain?  I don't think they can retain less than they would save in a buyout (he's under 25 so 1/3 on the buyout) and still make a trade.  But you never know.

He might get picked up on waivers, and that's the route I'd go. Get rid of the doofus (it's clear he's not liked), free up the salary, and open a spot for a guy like Claesson.

I think it's the end of the line for Cowen in Ottawa. They have to know by now that scratching him will do nothing to motivate him or to do any kind of critical self-evaluation. I'm holding out hope for a money in, money out deal for a relatively expensive vet, who can contribute, from a bottom-feeding team who might see a project they can afford to invest a little time in, along with some youth and size...

Easy on the Claesson love. It's 1 game against a team that is playing a no forecheck trap style for 90% of the game.

He was making tape-to-tape passes and looked very comfortable with the puck. More than anyone can say about Cowen all year.

Somebody will take him via trade. What we get back I have no idea. Maybe Tim Murray in Buffalo takes. Cowen needs to go to a team that has the money and is willing to pay his salary for a year. He's an RFA after this contract meaning they're not going to lose him for nothing. Some other options could be Pittsburgh who has a terrible blueline, just cleared some money (Dupuis), and has no one in their system defensively. I see Columbus as an option as well, Detroit, and always think the Oilers are a good fit for a d-man. Colorado too but I don't think they have the money for a reclamation project.

Cowen+Lazar for Yakupov. Do you do it?
