Gryba was too slow coming back, but that still doesn't explain why Methot was going down like that.  Other ways to prevent a pass.
Gryba still had an angle to cut the Cane off, this is another example of Methot trying to do someone else's job. Just do your job and trust others to do theirs. It's like playing D in football, as soon as you don't trust other players to do their job, the whole system breaks down.
