OK, I missed the first episode of the second half of season 2 of Suits. Basically because it runs on a different night (and maybe a week behind) in Canada. So I started looking at various other options (as it's not on ROD). So you've got Hulu and Vudu and various other options, besides Netflix. Of course all of these are not available in Canada. Not directly, anyway.

What if I cancel Rogers, then get Teksavvy ($38/month + modem purchase), UnblockUS ($5), Netflix ($8), Hulu ($8 gets you a bunch of TV shows, including many current shows with limited ads), Vudu (rent movies on DVD release dates for $2 for 2 nights) -- that's $59/month. Way less than what I pay now. Some questions, though:

1. Has anyone done something like that? Can anyone comment on what is available on Hulu -- are all new shows available or just the most popular ones? How soon after they air are they on Hulu? Are there only shows from specific networks?
2. What are my options for the upstairs TV? One simple possibility is to get a blu-ray player with Smart TV functions, which will give me at least Netflix (pretty much all of them have that; not sure which ones -- if any -- have Hulu/Vudu, given that it's US based).
3. I know (well, I've heard) UnblockUS works well with Netflix; does it also work with Hulu/Vudu?
4. Is 300 GB/month sufficient? If not, then for an extra $11 or so you get the unlimited plan.

5. Most important: I don't believe the above covers *any* hockey. I'm spoiled now because pretty much every Senators game is available (and in HD, with TSN=HD being free). I don't really care all that much for non-Sens games. I do, however, care about some international hockey (WJC, Olympics). What are the options.

1) Hulu is fine until you need to pay, they reject Canadian credit cards(or so a coworker tells me) so you'll need to figure something out here
2) you can get a PS3, it has Hulu (just need a US PSN acct)
3) according to their website it works
4) depends how much TV you watch, a lot of HD traffic will eat that up.
5) get Gamecenter Live you can watch Sens games, not sure if unblock US works with that, a VPN works for sure

I have unblock us, Teksavvy, NHL Game Center and Netflix.
Basically can watch every single NHL game and US netflix, all on my PS3 or Laptop.
I don't even have 300Gb, I have the 75GB (29.99)and I usually end up around 85GB so I finish around 35$ (0.50$ per GB over). Im sure 300GB is enough for you.

Hey, does unblockus work for devices other than your PC, like my smart tv? Is it just a matter of setting up the DNS server on my wireless router? But there has to be some kind of authorization -- they have to be able to identify me as a paying customer, so I assume either my IP or MAC address have to be authorized on their side. How many different devices can I set up like this?

I think once it's setup on your router, it will automatically apply to all devices in your house. Could be wrong, haven't done it myself.

Woo-hoo! I'm watching "Secret of the Wings" on Neflix -- it was not available on the Canadian one. My girls are very excited.

Just wait till the boys fire up Netflix and see all the "new" stuff.

Now, how do I get Vudu or Hulu? They want to watch "Here Comes the Boom" and it's not available for streaming yet. Pretty sure Vudu will have it, but don't know how to do that on my LG smart tv.

PS3. Of course! I can use the PS3 to watch Vudu. Now, hopefully they don't require a US billing address.

Crap. I'd read one blog where the guy used CA 90210 for his billing address and it was accepted. Well, apparently they've tightened things up a bit. They attempt to verify your address (I used Kanata, CA, 90210 -- there is apparently a street with in Beverly Hills with the same name as mine -- they offered me that as one of the choices). Anyhow, because they can't keep up with street and town names, they let me enter my address, however when I entered the credit card info Visa verified my street address but no the zip code. And I can't enter my postal code because the webpage checks the syntax.

Can I get a credit card with a US billing address and feed it using PayPal? Or is there some other trick for using Vudu in Canada?

Just saw this post on DHC: Roku 3 + Hockeystreams + Netflix = cut cord

One interesting part in it, he talks about hockeystreams.com which offers low-delay HD streaming of NHL, AHL and CHL games for $110/year.

Never heard of them, but sounds interesting.

Anyone know if Avast VPN would open up US Netflix?

You don't need a VPN. A VPN will reduce your download speed. There are free DNS servers available.

I use a company called Private Internet Access to go the other way, into Canada. 40 smackeroos a year. You can use it on practically any device.
