Maybe Z.Smith can someday fill in for Neil, he's not there yet.

Ok, that doesn't mean he isn't overrated lol.

Not to me, he's met my expectations. Injuries are the only sore point but his skill set is as advertised.

As for Neil I think he is underrated considering other teams pay people like Boogard, Shelley to do what he does and he does more.

I feel this will most likely be Neil's last season in Ottawa. TOo much depth now and with Z. Smith and Bass in Bingo. Really feel Bass will get the call when Neil has departed Ottawa

Bass is an RFA this summer, I don't even think he'll be given a qualifying offer.

I think he will, he's been pretty good for Bingo and I doubt he thinks he's going to get a one-way offer from another team.

He's payed to also put up his 60 points or so, which he hasn't gotten close to.

I don't think bass is in the long term plans of the Ottawa Senators, but he'll probably be re-signed for Binghamton. He just won some AHL award for community help or whatever.

How the hell is he payed to put up 60 points? His role isn't that of a point producer. And even then, what player that is on an UFA deal makes $2M and gets 60 points?

Although I would say he's overpaid for his role, I don't really give a damn, it's not my money. It only really hurts us if we are going to use that cap space on something else, and we have more than enough.

Talking about Michalek, not Neil Laugh1

We'll see how he does if he and Spezza stay healthy and we have a real coach running the PP.

You're probably right. He shows how bare our cupboards once were. There must be a dozen forwards ahead of him on the depth chart now.

Agreed. He'll be lucky to get qualified, but I think he does just based on how good he is in the community and what a hard worker he is on and off the ice.

I don't believe management will want Z. Smith to be fighting all the time, he's going to become a valuable guy on the 3rd/4th line. Sure he can do it now but when he improves his game as we're all hoping for him to, he'll be relied upon alot more, don't think we will want him fighting at the frequency he does. Bass on the other hand can still provide some jam and is a big body that can ideally replace Neil in the not too distant future. I don't see why he wouldn't be needed at all

I hate to say it, but I don't think Bass ever sees the NHL. For depth in Bingo it might not be a bad idea, but we have Dziurzynski who's primed to take a big role next year and Cowick who should be ready to take on a 4th line role there as well. I can't think of their lineup for next year, but there's not a lot of openings as far as I remember.

As of now, the Sens have 6 NHL defenceman (as far as contracts go). Gonchar, Kuba, Phillips, Karlsson, Lee, Carkner. It's unlikely one will be traded or waived or bought out. If Cowen is going to be on the team next year, then maybe Carkner can be moved to the 4th line forward spot, because losing a defenceman for 5+ minutes is not good. As of now there's potentially at least one spot to fill.

I personally think Carnker will be press box fodder.

Yeah probably. Good insurance for when Kuba stubs his toe and misses a month.

Nobody wants anyone fighting on a full-time basis, but a guy who is willing to drop them to learn-a-lesson-'bout-a-messin' with our players is gold. Gotta have 3-4 guys like that so you can spread them out and always have one on the ice.

I wouldn't count out Kuba being moved yet. The Sens may be willing to eat a big(ger) contract from some other team if they can send Kuba back (this would work out best in a deal involving a forward, something around a Huselius type). That being said Carkner in a Shubert-esque swing role might be the best thing for the club.

Phillips - Karlsson
XXXX - Gonchar
Cowen - Lee
Carkner

Mabe that 2nd pairing slot goes to Kuba, maybe it goes to Rundbland (would love to give him a year in the AHL) or maybe even a David Hale type veteran presence on a 1 year deal.
