Spezza, again impressed but not for the reason people may think. Personally, I don't think he had his best game in the 1st and 2nd, 1/2 of the 3rd, but he really kept going and showed a lot by not letting a bad game to that point effect how the rest of his game will turn out. He kept at it and he almost helped The Sens tie it up, to me that's the biggest sign he is maturing and becoming a more patient player and leader.

And then this is basically my thoughts on the game. I was slightly intoxicated, so I missed some points, but same old (young) guys: Greening, Condra and Butler continue to impress, Hale was solid, Lee was good again. I actually thought Macandcheese was good, he kept the Sens in the game all the way along. Obviously there are goals in there that weren't great, but with Kuba Cussing around in front of him, it's far from a 'routine' save on either one, then after that I thought he made some monumental saves for the Sens to have a chance in the 3rd. This is one of those games where the save % doesn't tell the whole story.

I don't know how people could possibly ride Kuba last night. The guy was put on his off side, with a rookie playing is first NHL game, who isn't close to being NHL ready. Talk about a guy that was put in a tough spot.

Here's some advice to Clouston and co.: don't put Kuba on his wrong side with a rookie, he's simply not good enough.

What were his choices?

I thought he'd put Hale with Wiercioch as they'd played together at times in Bingo - then leave the Kuba/Karlsson duo together, but I guess someone's going on their off side no matter what.

Doesn't matter really, next game I would suggest Hale, or just send Wiercioch back down and let's take a look at right-D-man Gryba.

Wiercoich should get another look, he won't have that 1st game nerves going on and might settle in a little more. Gryba is going to get a couple games next week I assume playing beside Kuba as well.

I think we can start to talk about Greeing, Condra and Butler as part of the Sens next year. I think there was some skeptics about whether they could continue their solid play, but they've answered all critics in spades IMO.

I think David Hale was pretty damn good.

Yeah, he plays a nice, simple game. I like it.

For some reason he doesn't seem to be all that hot in the AHL yet he comes up here and is always solid?

I think the beat writer for the B-Sens Joy was saying that he's the glue that holds the D-core together down there, but he was sidelined with a terrible virus for a couple of weeks IIRC.

Certainly, the coach did single Hale out as a big asset in one of the few interviews I've heard with him.

Hale is a very good 6, 7 NHL dman at this point, nothing wrong with that. It seems more and more likely with that wya The Sens are heading perhaps Carkner is the guy that gets moved in the off season.

I think we might keep Carkner as the 7th and have Hale as the first call up depending on who gets injured, then you have the option of keeping one of Cowen or Rundblad in the AHL - or both I guess.

It's starting to look like there's absolutely NO future for Kuba here when maybe it looked like he might bounce back, so hopefully we can move him at the draft or in the summer sometime.

Phillips/Lee, KubaHale/Karlsson, Gonchar/Cowen or Rundblad

extra:
Carkner

First call up: Hale and Rundblad/Cowen

A year + away: Gryba and Wiercioch.

I'll admit, that's not great either. We'll see I guess.

Carkner is a decent bottom pairing D-man whom I think is one of the better fighters in the league (beat up Boogard). We'll need someone like that since players will be taking certain 'liberties' with our young guys next year. I'm no sure if Neil is up for it (he doesn't seem to like to fight anymore).

Only problem with Carks is you lose a D-man for 5 mins when goes to the box for a fighting major.

That's a good point, we need a fighter that can also play besides Neil.

I like Carkner as much as the next guy but fact of the matter is The Sens do not miss him in the least and the way of the pure enforcer is going that of the Dodo Bird... There are better players than Carkner in Ottawa that will play in the top 6 next year, IMO.

Like you said, losing a D man for 5 mins at a time is huge (always more than 5 mins btw)... It wears down other guys. At this point I couldn't justify putting in Carkner over Lee and I don't see how it can be justified going into next year either.

Carkner is probably going to be a 13th forward/7th D man next year. That's all I can see him being. Lee has turned himself into a really solid NHL D man.

Next year the blueline will probably look like this. (as it stands)

Phillips/Lee
Kuba/Karlsson
Gonchar/Rundblad
Carkner

If Kuba or Gonchar somehow get moved, just plug Cowen in there and mix it around. Either way, that's probably how it is going to look.
