Major Over-reaction much?

Over-reaction? Prags, he's been horrible. Horrible. He needs to wake the Cuss up - now.

For a dozen or so of the first 22 games. He hasn't been horrible in all the games, and he was actually pretty good in 1 or 2. Certainly not what we've come to expect from the last ***TEN YEARS***. That's my point -- SG11 said "I give up" and I think *that* is an over-reaction.

Wow! he was good for 1 or 2 games this season, really? Wait I have to give him a round of applause for that GAME DAY: Ottawa Senators @ Pittsburgh Penguins - 1:00pm ET - FRI. Hey, at least they put up a nice shot total. Too bad that horse-faced Fleury decided to pick today to have a lights out game.

Knowing the Sens, this is the kind of game that gets them out of a slump.
3 straight wins incoming, book it.

That's great Rooney. I suppose you think he's played quite well, huh? I'll tell you what - and you might want to try to come to terms - he's played 20+ games and he's been horrible. If you want this team to get back into the playoff race, you better pray that he starts to play better.

Don't worry SD and SG, I am with you all the way on this. And it's not JUST this year, Phillips has been on the decline since last year, even maybe the end of the season before that.

I think this overlooking the past 2 years for the entirety of his career is a weak argument. He's clearly on the decline and at his age he has peaked. He's not worth re-signing and I predict that if re-signed for anything near what he is making now for long-term, fans will be wishing they hadn't re-signed him.

Yeah Dash, you see what we're all seeing I think. I want so badly to give him the benefit of the doubt, but at the same time, this isn't about being a good guy, this is about what's best for the team - and I continue to say that if Phillips doesn't improve, we're sunk and he'll be playing for someone different by the deadline.

i disagree. i think we could do with a guy like phillips, but maybe he'd be best suited for a second pairing. would karlsson be responsible enough to be paired with gonchar and cowen with big rig? gonchar and karlsson.... tons of offence, questionable defencively.

Not much of a stretch. Our next games are Toronto, Edmonton, then Toronto again. Then the Islanders. 8 points there would do this team some good. Anything less than gaining half the amount of possible points would be really troubling to me.

Sure, maybe @ $2M you keep him, but not at >$3M. He is what he is, and he'd be better off making a lot less to keep the pressure off.

Enough of the loyalty contracts. Fisher is not a $4.5M player. He was paid generously for his character. Do not make the same mistake with Phillips.

Off-sport but not off-topic. Did you hear what Hank Steinbrenner, part-owner of the NY Yankees said about unsigned longtime Yankee stars Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.

http://network.yardbarker.com/mlb/article_external/yankees_we_already_made_veterans_very_rich/3667878

Hank Steinbrenner has a message as the New York Yankees negotiate to re-sign Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.

"As much as we want to keep everybody, we've already made these guys very, very rich, and I don't feel we owe anybody anything monetarily,'' the Yankees co-chairman said Tuesday. "Some of these players are wealthier than their bosses.''

With negotiations moving slowly, the Yankees declined to offer salary arbitration to Jeter and Rivera before Tuesday's midnight deadline. New York also failed to offer arbitration to left-hander Andy Pettitte, reliever Kerry Wood and first baseman Lance Berkman but did make the offer to right-hander Javier Vazquez, unlikely to re-sign following a disappointing season.

By offering arbitration, New York would receive draft-pick compensation if Vazquez signs elsewhere. His agents have been negotiating with the Florida Marlins.

New York has made a $45 million, three-year offer to Jeter, a baseball executive with knowledge of the proposal said, speaking on condition of anonymity because it wasn't made public.

"We've encouraged him to test the market and see if there's something he would prefer other than this,'' general manager Brian Cashman told ESPNNewYork.com, without confirming the figure. "If he can, fine. That's the way it works.''

Jeter is coming off a $189 million, 10-year contract that was second only to Alex Rodriguez's deals of $252 million and $275 million, both over a decade.

"Negotiating is always a process,'' Steinbrenner said. "I know he wants to stay. It's going to come down to what's fair for everybody considering all circumstances.''

Now 36, Jeter hit .270 with 10 homers, down from a .334 average and 18 homers the previous season. While his RBIs increased by one to 67, his on-base percentage fell from .406 to .340 and his slugging average dropped from .465 to .370.

An off year or the start of a career-ending tailoff? No way to tell.

But without the threat of negotiations involving other teams, there's little pressure for either side to make a deal quickly.

"Do we want to keep Derek? Of course we do, obviously,'' Steinbrenner said. "Obviously we all want to keep Derek and we all want to keep Mo.''

Steinbrenner remains confident deals will be reached to keep the pair.

"I don't think in the end they will be unreasonable,'' he said.

I'd still give him a 3 million X 3 or 4 years. I think this might be weighing on him pretty hard. Or not, I'm not even sure anymore. Fisher has been devastating to us @ 4.2 million. One can hope that the 16.5 million invested in Fisher, Phillips, Kovalev and Leclaire will pay off this season...some time. Leclaire is starting, Kovalev was really good for a while and has regressed a little, the other 2 have been a waste of cap space frankly.

I don't know if I'd go as long as 4 years. If he is really committed to staying in Ottawa for his family, then I think we might be better served by doing shorter term deals. Ideally, if he's going to be here 4 years, I'd rather it be on 2 two year deals, that way it could be something like 2 x 3 million, then 2 x 2-2.5 million.

The real problem with Phillips is that if his defensive game goes south, he's completely useless to this team on the ice. Alfredsson may tail off offensively, but he'll always find a way to help the team.

I think your right Hem, but I doubt he would take a 2 year, 6 million. Maybe I guess, but I can 100% see him asking for 5+ years. He's young enough to command term and close to 4 million - despite this year.

We all know how well regarded is amongst other players and I assume other GMs, that's gonna translate to a 4 X 4 offer at the least IMO. I think the best we can hope for is a 3 X 3 which is WELL below market value and would entail Phillips leaving 7 million dollars on the table.

I wouldn't leave that money on the table personally, no matter how much I like the team and the city, that's a lot of money and a guaranteed extra year on your contract and that's why I can possibly see him moved at the deadline. We could lock horns with he and his agent and end up seeing him walk for nothing like A-Train. I guess it all depends on where we are in February.

ok people, rality check. phillips's play may have gone down in the last 3 years(one bad, one descent, this year doesn't look too good) but i'll tell you one thing, he's not on this team this year if all we're offering is 2-2.5. someone will give him 4 i'm sure... and i'm sure he's sure. now he might settle for 3 but most likely 3.5. now i'm not saying we should or not, i'm saying BM probably will give him just that. personaly, if the season continues and we're out of the playoffs(or even facing the 8th place) i think phillips, no matter what his play is like, would be our biggest and best trade bait. we're looking for a good forward prospect? phillips can get us that. and there's no reason we can't bring him back next year for 3X3.
