I'll give Toronto full credit for the victory last night...I watched some of it, and they played pretty well. The Leafs also had a boatload of powerplays, which limited Pittsburgh's ability to produce offense.

Anyway, with Lupul out, they'll be relying even more on guys like MacArthur and Riemsdyk...so we'll see how that goes.

I think Toronto must draw the most penalties of any team each year. They always seem to have the edge in PP's given. Or is that just me?

Pittsburgh had 29 PIMs (including one fighting major), and Toronto had 15. Toronto also had an extended (almost 2 minute) 5 on 3 for the second game in a row.

In their previous game vs Buffalo, the Sabres had 40 PIMs (including fighting majors) and Toronto had 30.

In their first game vs the Habs, Montreal had 15 PIMs, and Toronto had 17.

So far, they have 62 PIMs, and their opponents have 84. That seems like a pretty big differnce after 3 games...we'll see how it progresses.

Look at the refs birth certificates and drivers licenses. Place of Birth or Address reads: Don
Mills, Mississauga, Downsview, Ajax, North York, Aurora... That's all you need to know.

Jeez. Phaneuf can't hit the net, but he sure can hit his own players. Wow. Tough break for Lupul.

As expected, Scrivens looks to get the start tonight for the Leafs when they host the Islanders.

Based on our discussion this morning about how Toronto seems to get more PP time than the average, I pulled up the stats from the past few years.

In 07/08, Toronto had 558 mins of 5 vs 4 ice time. This ranked them 6th in the NHL. Ottawa was 24th with 513.9 mins of 5 vs 4.

In 08/09, Toronto had 503.3 mins of 5 vs 4. This ranked them 21st. Ottawa was 18th with 516.1.

In 09/10, Toronto had 503.1 mins of 5 vs 4. This ranked them 7th. Ottawa was 24th with 453.5.

In 10/11, Toronto had 526.6 mins of 5 vs 4. This ranked them 3rd. Ottawa was 28th with 418.7.

Last season, Toronto had 416 mins of 5 vs 4, ranking them 19th. Ottawa was 16th with 419.6.

What conclusions can one draw? Well, our perception isn't totally off that Toronto seems to get more than their share of PP timeā€¦but it isn't as bad as we think. What probably skews our perception is that Ottawa tends to get the short end of the stick in the PP time department.

There is also a difference between deserved and undeserved PIMs.

For example, 07-08 Ottawa had a highly skilled team. A team like that plays a style that should draw penalties. I remember Hossa skating through center ice with two guys surfing behind him, but as soon as he lifted his stick from behind to reach for someone, he'd be gone with 2 for hooking.
