On the other hand, Locke or wheover is one Shannon injury away from getting his minutes. Losing him wouldn't hurt the team.

I guess the thing you have to look at is Shannon is on a one-way contract, Locke a 2-way, and calling Locke up adds to the cap, cause unless Shannon is waived, both cap hits count. And Shannon is one of those cap friendly guys. Has NHL experience and is cheap. He's a plug. Can't really ask for too much from him other than to play sound hockey (which it seems like he is doing).

However, when you got your expensive talent under-performing, basically at the level of a league-minimum player but at top dollar, then you have a problem.

Come on Big Ev...come on man. Shannon has 2 gaols in a combined 12 minutes of ice time. He's fast, he's responsible, he has soft hands, he doesn't complain about getting...6 minutes a game. What do you want him to do? Score a hatty every 6 minutes?

I've stood up for Shannon a long time, but last year I admitted he looked lost and done, but this year I've been pleased with his effort 100%.

I think Locke will come up, he's one injury away in the top 6 from getting a legit chance. His footspeed looked okay to me in pre-season, but that's always been a huge knock. Count me in as someone who wants to see Locke, but not at the expense of anyone in the lineup at the moment.

It's a pointless conversation, really. Locke isn't next in line to get called up -- not even close. It's Butler. I wouldn't be surprised at all, either, to see O'Brien get the call before Locke. The organization always gives its draft picks more opportunities than its free agent signings.

Not sure about that. Maybe Butler, but they were pretty clear when they signed Locke that he'd be called up more than once during the year (he's very close to a co-worker of mine).

O'Brien seems to have figured out how to play Pro Hockey and I really hope it translates to NHL hockey. He's been a big disappointment his last couple training camps.

I remember calling SG11 from the Development Camp to tell her that O'Brien was the best player on the ice - and that included Cowen or Wiercioch. He's come a long, long way.

He's also written up in the new Hockey News, which was nice.

I'm still surprised at Locke's AHL salary though...

O'Brien didn't show much at all to me in the preseason games, but he is a power forward so I wouldn't be surprised to see him struggle to show consistency until the age or 25 or so.

Pretty sure that that's what I'd tell him *before* he signed with my organization, too.

He wasn't given much ice time as I recall in pre-season, but yeah, if he continues like he is, he might actually make the NHL.
