It seem that we're behind on a lot of things when it comes to our arena. Outdated scoreboard, bad ice, bad lighting (by this I mean I would prefer an arena like MSG where the stands seem to be darker than the ice itself, and it's easier to watch the game IMO), etc.

When you have $60 million in personnel on one sheet of ice, how could any owner, manager, or coach accept anything but perfection?

I went skating at SBP a couple of years ago and wasn't impressed with the ice.

I agree, its one thing when a player breaks his leg due to blocking a shot or something like that (aka foligno) but when you have your players breaking their ankle because the ice sucks. Its NHL (forget even that we are a canadian team - its a professional league) and the ice on ANY NHL rink should be as best as ice can be!

I've skated at the SBP a few times (through my kids' school) and, to be honest, I did not notice anything super horrible. Of course I'm not an NHL player but, still. If this was a rut in the ice maybe it's not the ice-maker's fault. It's unfortunate, for sure, but apart from this incident and the one involving Alfie a few years back, how many players have gotten injured at SBP as a result of ice? In Alfie's case it was a rut caused by a skate. All reports seem to indicate the same thing in Kuba's case. Players have gotten bigger and blades have gotten harder. Maybe some smart chemist out there can come up with an additive to make the ice more resistant to chipping? Do we know what causes "bad ice"? I know the water in Kanata leaves some kind of pink residue when it evaporates. Could it be something like that?

There could be a lot of reasons for bad ice. The ice makers might not be getting enough time to lay the foundation of the ice (it generally takes almost 24 hours to build a suitable ice rink) or the temperature of the concrete slabs and the brinewater pipes under the ice are varying enough to cause a fluctuation in the temperature of the ice itself or there is a strong possibility of humidity in the building being over the acceptable limit.

The ice chips on the top usually because it's too brittle because the layers are too thick and added on too quickly. Ruts are usually formed because the ice is too warm and the softness creates pockets of water that collapse on pressure.

If the ice itself is built well, it would take a herculean effort by a player to create enough of a groove in the ice with their skate to become a rut. Essentially the player would have to knowingly use his skate to hack away at the surface.

Here are some strange and funny injury stories from the world of sports. Worth a look for sure.

http://www.ottawasun.com/sports/othersports/2010/09/16/15387551.html

A preview of some:

Former NBA player Latrell Sprewell broke his hand when he tripped and fell while trying to punch another man who threw up on his yacht.

While playing for the Baltimore Orioles, outfielder Marty Cordova fell asleep in a tanning bed and his face was too burned to play the next day

Jacksonville Jaguars punter Chris Hanson suffered greatly after head coach Jack Del Rio decided to bring his team's mantra "keep chopping wood" to life in 2003. Del Rio placed a large tree stump and an axe in the middle of the locker-room and invited players to take hacks at the wood. After practice one day, Hanson took a hack while off balance and drove the axe deep into this left leg. (Wikimedia Commons/Keith Allison/HO)

Former San Diego Padres pitcher Adam Eaton accidentally stabbed himself in the stomach with a knife while trying to unwrap a DVD. (REUTERS/Bradley C Bower)

England and Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman missed the first half of the 1996-97 season after damaging his knee ligaments bending down to pick up his television remote control. (REUTERS/KEVIN LAMARQUE)

Chek out the rest, they're hilarious.

This one is my favourite!

"In 1990, Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz burned himself ironing a shirt while he was wearing it. Smoltz admitted burning himself, but denied wearing the shirt while ironing."

Why would you admit to running to the other room to watch a replay of yourself on TV?

Maybe the truth was worse, and that's the best thing he could come up with. Maybe he was running to watch grey's anatomy. Actually this was 1983. Maybe it was General Hospital.
