TAMPA - Unless the Senators go very deep into the playoffs, the NHL season is over for defenceman Filip Kuba.
Kuba went under the knight to repair a back injury Tuesday with back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles. The news wasn't unexpected, but it is a big blow as the Senators prepare for Round 1 of the playoffs.
Kuba suffered the injury playing for the Czech Republic at the Olympics in Vancouver in February,
The Senators made the news official before going on the ice Wednesday at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa. The club will face the Tampa Bay Lightning Thursday to wrap up a three-game road trip.
Ottawa will open the NHL playoffs next week against Pittsburgh or New Jersey.
Kuba has been one of the club's top defencemen, plays important minutes in crucial situations and was working well with rookie Erik Karlsson. Fortunately, the Senators acquired blueliner Andy Sutton from the New York Islanders at the deadline.
Kuba is gone a minimum of four weeks. He would only play if the Senators get through at least the first round -- and possibly further, GM Bryan Murray said.
“It’s unfortunate for Filip because we like him and he’s important to our team,” said Murray. “He got hit in the Olympics in the game against Finland. From that point on, he had a difficult time playing.”
