I gave you one back for admitting you were "wrong". Hey, the word was in your post. It counts.

Thank-you, much obliged. I thought I was going to have to start bribing people by offering free single malt scotch Smile

Wow, desperate much? You could always try to register a second account and + yourself. Not that I'm advocating it, but free single-malt (shots, I assume, not bottles) for rep points is a little extreme.

Well, I guess it just lasted a week. Was 39 last time I checked.

Prices are ridiculous in many ways. I just came back from Zellers. THey had HP: Philosopher's Stone blu ray for $26.98, $22.98 and $16.98. Same version, just from different promotions (one of them had a yellow sticker for $10 off Half-Blood Prince tickets -- umm, it hasn't been playing in theaters for six months). They also had two different prices for the same version of Goblet of Fire (the one I'm actually tempted to upgrade) but there was no $16.98 for that one. I might have been tempted at $17, probably would have bought it for $15, and definitely at $10. Once the studios realize that those are my price points (or run out of idiots who are buying 4-5 year old movies for $23-27) then I'll consider it.

I must admit, I was a little tempted when I saw A Knight's Tale for $18, but the version I've got is Superbit, so there would be very little to gain going blu. I'd probably be getting it more to do some comparison viewing than anything else.

I hate those mass-market retailers (Zellers, wal-mart, superstore etc). That's where the usual dude goes and that's where it's the most expensive.

I guess I don't complain because I only buy when there are good deals, but if the mass-market doesn't know about those, prices will never go down.

I can't wholeheartedly agree. Deals can be had everywhere. For example, I got my Indiana trilogy at Zellers. I think I paid $30 when it was $45 everywhere else. I also got my BttF trilogy there for just $15. As for WalMart, their "deal" is they try to have the lowest overall prices, and they often don't really have sales (Boxing Week and not much else). However WalMart has an effect on the overall market as they are the ones pushing for $20 movies. They were the first ones who started selling older movies at $9.98 prices, and have since lowered that even further. Don't you remember buying Previously-Viewed DVDs at BlockBuster for $15 and thinking you were getting a great deal?

Anyhow, I try to check as many places as I can, starting with the US. In Canada you have shopbot.ca, although that mostly doesn't cover movies and games (in the US, shopbot.com resolved to Amazon.com). In the US you start with DVDPriceSearch.com. Of course the "bots" don't pick up every sale out there, so places like RedFlagDeals.ca are great as well. Costco has to be one of the most frustrating ones. Every once in a while they'll have fantastic deals, but you've got to be in-store to see them, since their web site is completely different. They should mount a little high-def camera on a Roomba and let it drive around at night, then post the resulting video or stills on-line.

I'm not sure about blu-ray but for video games; I've found that most of the time ,the best deals are used; from video stores; actually I sold a couple of used games for more than what I paid for them. I was pretty happy about that; now if I could find a way for them to pay me to play, I'd be in heaven Smile

It used to be easy to buy games for the boys. That was before they knew about things like release dates. My (now) teenager was counting down the days until the release of Sims 3. He knew exactly when it would come out and there was no way I could have gotten it for any less than the price when it came out.

It used to be that I'd look for the highest-rated games (for the GBA or the GC), then look for the best deals on year-old (or older) games. Ah, the good old days of "Players' Choice" selections. I really, really feel sorry for those parents whose kids insist on getting movie-based games that come (usually) just before the movie. Wasn't there a "Chicken Little" game that sold for around $50 when it first came out? Most people wouldn't pay $5 for it now.

Video games, I'm mostly on kijiji Smile. Sometimes I play 5 games for the price of 1. I buy 1, trade it for another game that I will trade later etc.

THe Wii sold 3.81M in December, in US alone. Goddamn... that's like 1/70 of the population, or 1/15 of households. Holy moly...

I'm a little slow today so having a hard time understanding your figures but 1/15 sounds about right ; 300 Million people over 6 BIllion population; about 5% of the overall population and a much larger percentage of "civilized" population (the ones that have access to electricity and a TV)

Well, 300M people in US, 3.81M sales, 300/3.81 = 78 ( I kinda rounded New PS3 Owners Thread - Page 7 159628 ).
1/78 = 1.27% of the population.

For just a month. That's pretty unbelievable, seriously, when you know that 30Million (10% of populaiton) already has the machine, I just can't believe it.

30 million is actually more than 10% because it goes by households.

And that would count as 300% of households, then.
