The Pens also got some great bounces on the other Kennedy goal and the Staal goal.

And, it's going to start going in for Spezza. Soon.

Karlsson, as was expected prior to the pre-season where he was great, should probably get more time in the minors. Kuba's also going to return, which should help out our D considerably. I'd also call up Lee, who is less effective offensively but more steady than Picard, IMO.

That would give us:

Phillips - Volchenkov
Kuba - Campoli
Lee - Carkner

Which is pretty steady as she goes.

IMO, the third period I saw was more convincing for me of this team's potential than our wins over the Leafs or NYI.

League-wide, WORST signing of the summer.

2 defensemen in TOronto share the contention IMO.

...and if we go back a couple years, we can add the Finger signing to the list of terrible defensemen signing in TO.

Just got back from the game, Spezza was really good all night along with Michalek. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WHY IS ALEX PICARD STILL PLAYING. I don't like Brian Lee's game but he is a way better alternative at this point than Picard, hell Schubert would be better. Campoli was terrible all night. I know I am going to get slammed for this but Alfredsson really needs to pick it up NOW. He looks extremely frustrated out there and it is really affecting his game. Nick Foligno has to realize that if he wants to play he needs to get to the centre of the ice, he just stays out on the perimeter right now.

Karlsson was the worst defenseman tonight, not even close IMO. When Kuba returns, he might go to Bingo...

EDIT: foof, -3...

Anyone else agree that the Sens should insert Kuba and Lee into the top six and take out Picard and Chris "giveaway" Campoli.

The forwards are playing hard working games because they know that they could get yanked in favor of someone else. Let's try applying that logic to the backend.

Karlsson was bad, but Picard was far, far worse. Campoli also sucked. Carkner was okay, Phillips and Volchenkov were very good (again).

I only saw the third period, but I thought the team looked very good. I was in disbelief that the crowd was booing at the end because the Sens had lost to the Stanley Cup Champions, sans our number 1 defenceman.

The Cheechoo - Spezza - Michalek line looked fantastic, and I thought the Kovalev - Fisher - Alfredsson line looked very good as well. Foligno - Regin - Shannon, on paper, looks like a better third line than most teams can claim.

Kennedy's second goal was a little weak looking at the highlights, but otherwise I can't really fault Leclaire. The defence needs work, but getting a big, steady minutes guy like Kuba back will make a huge difference.

I don't think we should be worrying about the team losing to the Cup champs. The Leafs should be worrying, but I'm not pulling my hair out over this one.

I see it mostly this way, with the exception of Kovalev, Fisher and Alfredsson who I didn't think look as good as they are capable of being. The Sens played well for the most part. Two posts I can think of, empty
nets for Kelly and Kovalev and two horrible bounces going in for the
Penguins.

Leclaire is still unproven to me, that single bad goal won't decide it one way or another. I think wprager was right with Donovan being great initially and then fading, I think he gets dropped and Regin comes in.

He's a 19 year old rookie defenseman though...you guys have to give this kid a chance. We ALL knew he was going to make some mistakes and be tentative with the puck while he was learning the game here. But I don't think he did anything earth shatteringly bad...he's just stuck with that defensive vortex for a partner Campoli.

I've been saying it all along, if Karlsson is going to succeed in Ottawa, he HAS HAS HAS HAS to have a steady veteran defensive partner to play with.

Were the first two periods that bad? I don't understand where all this gloom and doom is coming from.

For the first time this season, I'm really excited about our forward lines. And, I thought Kovalev - Fisher - Alfredsson looked especially good. There's a lot of potential there.

Definitely, the defence needs tweaking, but again so much will be gained just from the return of FK. Sub Kuba and Lee in for Karlsson and Picard and the defence looks very solid - or, at the very least, not a weakness that will lose us games.

Michalek - Spezza - Cheechoo
Kovalev - Fisher - Alfredsson
Foligno - Regin - Shannon
Neil - Winchester - Ruutu

Phillips - Volchenkov
Kuba - Campoli
Lee - Carkner

Leclaire
Elliott

That looks like a playoff team for sure.

Get that pile of Dung out of there. What a fuckin loser that guy is...Karlsson doesn't deserve to have a single one of those minuses...give them all to that idiot Campoli.

Another problem we had tonight was too many guys shooting around the net or at the goalie. I'm quite refreshed to see guys getting into the slot and getting good looks from prime scoring areas, but they have to pick their spots better when aiming. I saw too many guys tonight miss the net or shoot it straight into the goalie's pads...but that's something that can easily change.

Let`s get things clear here. I`m not judging Karlsson by any means. The mistakes he's made the last games, I expected them.
I'm not saying send Karlsson to BIngo, but IMO that's what Sens management will do, because the other 2 have one way contracts...
Karlsson have made quite a few mistakes tonight though, and he lost many battles along the board.

We lost, so it`s all doom and gloom GAME DAY: Pittsburgh Penguins @ Ottawa Senators - 7:30pm ET - Mon. Oct. 12th, 2009 - Page 10 668437

I think we played the best game of the year, considering the loss of Kuba... (Dean Brown agrees with me)
Alfredsson and Kovalev were awful tonight though.

Also, we might scream at Campoli and Picard for turning the puck over, but did you guys count how many TO did the PEns make tonight?

Not quite understanding some of the negativity from the fans at the rink tonight. I thought we could have easily won this game if some of the bounces had gone our way. Not one of Pittsburgh's goals were created by their skill, they were all fluky bounces (besides the 3rd.) We were moving our feet for the most part and created several chances for ourselves. Loved Michalek's game, he looks more comfortable having Cheech on his line. By no means was this a 4-1 game, and I feel pretty confident with this team after watching this "measuring stick" game.

Spezza with those 2 big dudes look absolutely awesome. You put Regin with Kovalev and Alfredsson, and keep the FFS line together. That`s what I suggest.

I agree 100% with you. They had two fluke bounces and two mistakes on our part. That's it. However, I have to say, I was not impressed with Campoli at all. This guy has to get his Donkey in gear soon or he's going to find himself riding the pine. He was -3 tonight, and I can't remember any offensive play so far this year where I said "great play by Campoli". At least Karlsson is making stretch passes and trying to find open guys who are going in with speed.

Absolutely. I'm certain when I say this, Cheechoo just needs to score 1 goal...what measly pathetic goal and the floodgates are going to open for this guy. He's tenacious on the forecheck, his work along the boards is phenomenal, he's getting into the dirty areas in the offensive zone and he's looking more and more like a scoring threat every time out. Sometimes as a goal scorer, you need just that one goal to go in to get that feeling back. Once he gets that monkey off his back, watch out.
