Here's a pretty decent read recapping things: http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Heatley-saga-stunned-teammates-Edmonton-still-a?urn=nhl,176449

"Spezza is by all accounts a fine fellow, but the Senators are paying a lot of money to a player who knows his own end of the ice only from pictures he has seen in magazines."

:^^^^: hilarious.

I don't know guys, I liked the article. He wasn't 100% right from my perspective, but he gave a fairly objective view of our random assortment of players. The blueline really doesn't look good and he's only focusing on the now...He obviously stayed away from the future so as to not convolute the general intention of the article.

Each one of you could have written a similar article with more of a "there's so many question marks" angle to it. Which, I think, is really all he's trying to say.

Apparently the author of that article is not the only one taking shots at Murray.

Problem is - the shortsightedness of the story doesn't even mention the Big 3 that Murray's responsible for on D (Karlsson, Cowen, Wiercioch) who are coming up the ranks in 2-3 years.

Nor does it mention the need for guys like Kovalev because Muckler left a gaping hole of prospects that we now have to build from the ground up.

Criticizing Spezza's defensive game is so last year.

Even when writers try to get it right in Ottawa, they get it...half right to be polite.

Spez>kudos to you for writing to The Citizen and posting your comments. Great plug for GM Hockey as well.

Bizarre that's it's unsigned...but whatever.

As you pointed out, this article says nothing that hasn't already been articulated elsewhere.

Perhaps the appearance of the piece signals that the hockey writers at The Citizen have decided to bring Bryan Murray's ability into question?

Maybe it's unsigned because The Citizen was worried this article would upset the fanbase?

But the article is too lukewarm in its conclusions, not really taking any kind of stand...it's a strange presentation of a jumble of opinions.

In any case, for the benefit of our members, here's the piece in its entirety...

FOLLOWING AN UNCERTAIN RECIPE
OttawaCitizen.com, July 14, 2009

What kind of hockey team are they building out in Kanata? What's the Senators' plan?

It's hard to know. Two seasons ago they dumped the work-challenged, inconsistent goaltender Ray Emery after he became a liability with his attitude and a nagging inability to stop pucks.

Then this off-season, the team's best scorer, Dany Heatley, mysteriously decided he must practise his craft elsewhere -- a contract worth $45 million over six years and playing in one of the best hockey markets in North America notwithstanding.

Apparently a disagreement over playing time with coach Cory Clouston contributed to his wanderlust. Now he wants to choose the team he is traded to despite the fact it is a buyers' market for players with big contracts and lots of personal baggage.

The Senators also have centre Jason Spezza, who with a $49-million contract over seven years, should be playing for Canada's Olympic squad next year, but hasn't made the cut. Apparently Olympic officials choose players on ability rather than contract size. Spezza is by all accounts a fine fellow, but the Senators are paying a lot of money to a player who knows his own end of the ice only from pictures he has seen in magazines.

And then there is forward Chris Neil, who is handy with his fists and took a hometown discount to stay with the Senators. Apparently a sale in the NHL is four years for $8 million. He scored three goals last year. Senators officials say Neil really wants to be with the team. Using that criterion, they could hire season ticket holders, some of whom could score three goals a year just on Heatley deflections.

Now the team has picked up Alex Kovalev for two years and $10 million. Kovalev is a player with enormous natural talent, but sometimes that talent doesn't show itself for long stretches. Charitably, you could call him inconsistent.

And after all this, the Senators have not found a solution to their immediate need for a puck-moving defenceman.

Putting together a winning sports club is complicated. Some of the great Oakland A's teams of the 1970s were an odd group with funny-sounding nicknames and a bunch of World Series victories. Many of those players moved to the New York Yankees, bringing their attitudes with them. Add wild coach Billy Martin to the mix and the soap opera was even weirder than the show in Oakland. There were days when the players looked as though they would rather take their bats to each other than the ball. Still, they won. So this is an unpredictable science.

Senators general manager Bryan Murray is a well-rounded hockey man. He has built excellent hockey teams before.

He knows what it takes to construct a club that can contend for the Stanley Cup.

He has sufficient hockey acumen to deserve the benefit of the doubt, and somewhere in the mix of players out in Kanata, there might be a combination that will contend next year.

But you can't blame Senators fans if they're having trouble seeing it.

the Kevin Lee post has me asking few questions, but the most prominent is...

Does Kevin Lee expect me to believe that on Draft day he and he alone was privey to information pertaining to the NYR - OTT trade that no one else in any new outlet had? Certainly there has been no mention from any of the NYR beat writers that I can find that specifies the players that Kevin Lee mentions in his post. So Kevin has sources that relayed that information to him and only him and no one else was given the information?

Couple that with the fact that Dawg (prior to getting the job with Chicago) during the trade deadline posted a fake trade scenario on HBuzz, and a few minutes later Lee via live broadcast, quoted the trade and stated that he had confirmed it with several "sources" in the NHL.

It was a load of bull and after Dawg called him out on it, Lee put him on ignore only after sending a very scathing and threatening e-mail.

I guess this is my way to say that only thing that I believe Kevin Lee has ever told the truth about it his name and even that i'm not 100% sure of.

Ok - one truthful statement - we can build on that...

Does it really matter to us here though? Kevin Lee is old news as far as most here are concerned is he not?

There's no way in the world Kevin Lee knew the names of the players involved in the Rangers/Sens trade. No way. Diddle me upside down, broke the code? Are you kidding? So the blame gets shifted to Murray now? Good. We needed a new storyline. Facepalm

Unreal man...I don't know what to say.

:^^^^: I mean really...seriously, that New York trade was 100% Kevin Lee-proof. Even Brooks - who LOVES to track down a good rumour - didn't know anything.
