I tend to agree but I get the sense that Mesz will have a much better year under Hartsburg and with increased ice time and being paired with Smith he could be that Offensive force we need. As for Lee I'd be a little surprised if he had a slump considering he didn't play a lot of games with the big club so I would see a potential slump coming in 09/10 if one came at all. By then we'd probably have Karlsson starting and Mesz should be a lot stronger by then as well.

I agree (and we all share the same hope, for sure). But the same could be said for Nycholat being paired up with Smith. I was mainly making two points:
1. Our defence will be stronger this year than last.
2. The difference between Meszaros and Nycholat/Schubert *may not be* all that great this year (certainly not enough to make the difference between making and missing the playoffs).

Are we all sure he can go to Russia? There are really strict rules between the two leagues now, and Mez is property of the Sens. I don't think Russia is an option for Mez.

This has everything to do with Meszaros - he's the one who is telling his agent "NO" in hopes of more money.

I've been saying all along to trade the S.O.B. - without him (by him sitting/holding out) are defence is awful, and our only hopes are to trade him to a team that has the room to pay him what he wants. At this point his future potential means nothing for all you who want the team to win now.

I think Mesz need to work on the Defensive side of his game so Smith will help there and his offense needs work in the first pass and point shot areas but lets not forget he still racked up some decent points, hits and blocked shots. He has some great upside but he's already going to be an impact player this season, assuming he plays.

As I just posted in another thread, the agreement is described as "non-competition clause":
http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2008/07/nhl_pa_iihf_reach_accord_with.html

It is a "pact to respect player contracts across all borders". Since Meszaros is not under contract, I don't think there is anything that is preventing him from going there (other than burning a couple of bridges; but there are 30 bridges in the NHL, with new ones being hired every season).

Meszaros is only the property of the Sens from an NHL perspective.

But isn't he still technically Sens property? If he does go to Russia, when he comes back to the NHL is he back to where he is now status-wise? In other words will he STILL be Sens property?

WOW! I like all of those proposals; except insn't it next to impossible to trade an un-signed player?

Although, I suppose if a team is eager or desperate enough, they may take him on and give Mezie the $ he FEELS entitled to, but still.

That would be my understanding as well.

Cap'n, it's just a bunch of different ideas involving Mesz and different teams that have quite ab it of defenceman or could use Mesz next year if he doesn't play in the NHL this year.

It shouldn't be impossible to trade an unsigned player. The problem is that Meszaros wants more money than Ottawa is willing to give. There are teams that would give him what he wants because they have the space or need to spend.

Good points. I think there's bound to be teams willing to pay Mesz what he wants so a trade is feasible.

I'm going to dig into that, because in all honesty, nothing i've heard from my guys have EVER had the Words Trade and Mezaros in the same sentence. Vermette rumors were running rampant, and I even heard that two teams were ready to offer upwards of $5M to Vermette in the form of an offer sheet, but thus far, I've have heard NOTHING in terms of Mezie being offered any sheets or trade speculation...

Stay tuned...

The lack of offer sheets surprise me. Surely a team would inquire seeing as how Ottawa has yet to re-sign him. Also, an offer sheet would allow Ottawa to match and force a re-sign, or let him walk for picks. Those picks don't helpt the team now, but they could always land a player via trade.

If he doesn't play in the NHL this year there's no point having him around at all - we need help this year and the only way you can get it is by makign a move.
