Do I think we're near a Cup right now? No, but I think he can help take us close in 10/11 - and if we're right on the cusp, he can always resign and get the job done.

Anything can happen. Still, it all hinges on when the Big 3 will be ready to play impact NHL hockey.
I don't know about that, through all this off-season talk the one guy that gets left out of all the talk; who may very well be the difference maker; is Pascal Leclaire.

Don't fool yourselves Sens fans, we're coming back with a vengeance this year and with the right luck (cause you need it) we could very well be in line to a cup.

I'm just throwing this out there but what if Heatley is traded, freeing up some cap space and Murray takes a chance on Sergei Zubov as a stop gap?

I'm sure that he and Kovalev are good friends, maybe he could convince Zubov to come here?

All depends what our cap situation looks like after (if? when?) a Heatley deal. To make another significant signing (i.e., over $2 mil), we'd have to be getting very little back in salary in any trade involving Heatley.

So, I'd say there are just too many variables right now to speculate on whether or not we might add a Zubov or Bertuzzi, etc. etc. With the team already over the cap, we need to sort out the Heatley situation, as well as a number of other unresolved issues (Elliott) and question marks on the team (Smith, Auld, Schubert). I don't think we'll be making any other significant moves until we start clearing up these issues.

Remember how bad a spot ANA was in two years when they were over the cap and had to lose Schneider in the final days before the season started? They basically had to give up a draft pick just to get rid of him. We don't want to end up in the same situation. Better to deal with it sooner rather than later.

True, the Heatley thing is still holding things up. Lets hope it can be dealt with ASAP.

How much would Zubov be looking for? 3 million? He was beaten to a pulp with injuries last season. I see his re-signing with the Stars personally, but if we could nab him, let the Smith and Kelly rumours begin post haste.

I guess it would all depend on whether he would be ready for next year and then whether or not he would come to Ottawa. All I know is that if we did somehow get Zubov then he'd be the most skilled defensemen we've probably ever had, even at the age he is at.

Im gonna go out on a limb and say we wont be signing any UFA's on the point until some cap space is clearned and roster spots.

I agree. We shouldn't be "russian" to sign any more UFAs. Better to trim the fat first.

At this point, Murray would be giving Heatley leverage if he signs more UFAs.

Right now, it isn't a stretch to get under the cap even with Heatley added in; sign another UFA of any significance and Heatley has to agree to be moved, otherwise Murray could end up in violation of cap rules.

I will add, though, that if there are offers on the table (that Murray can work with) that are from teams that Heatley has agreed to go to, then Murray may start making further moves; he'll also have to consider what he ends up signing his RFAs for though.

1st goal - he didn't even look excited or surprised when it went in; it was "business as usual"

2nd goal - while splitting the D, he tapped both their sticks out of the way then pulled the deke - freakish puck control

3rd goal - he was actually moving with his stick on the ice, not standing still with his stick in the air waiting for the "perfect pass"

This could turn out to be an awesome pickup.

It was interesting to read in the Sun today that Kovalev wanted to stay in Mtl but that when the door shut after Gainey didn't give him enough time, he chose to come to Ottawa. I really hope he does want to be here and not because he will be closer to his family, if he chooses to leave them in Montreal.

Which could very well be why he signed in Ottawa. He doesn't have to uproot the entire family, and can get there in 20 minutes to see them.
