No such thing as option years under the current CBA.

Ah, interesting. Another point up for discussion, then. It kinda falls under the guaranteed contracts that the players simply will not want to give up, but I just don't see a better way to make everyone happy-ish.

Well God forbid after a season and partial summer with so much negativity we should actually be optimistic about something. Sarcasm

Technically we did get back into the playoffs that year.

EDIT: Also, let me know if Kovalev ever scored a goal like Yakupov's at 1:53 in this video:

Signing Kovalev was still the right move and it made the team better, at least for a season. They made it back to the playoffs in 2009 and they gave the Champs a run for their money.

Meh, helped Ottawa get into the playoffs after an awful year and an insane summer. Maybe have pro-longed the rebuild though. Either way, at the time it was the right move.

I didn't mind Kovalev his first season, personally. Thought he was decent.

I thought he was just ok in the first year as well. I didn't mind the signing so much as the money paid.
