None of the 2 consoles will be backwards compatible.
It's a business move.

From reading about the XBONE, it's a hardware limitation more than a business move. The new CPU is very different than the old CPU.

Really, if either console gives me the ability to watch any video format like my PC does(namely .mkvs), then that'll be the deciding factor for me.

It's a business move because
1/ They didn't want to waste the engineers' time and their R&D budget on it
2/ They will re-sell old games on the online Xbox store / PS store for like $20

If someone owns an old game, they will also own the old console to play it on. If they want an old game they don't have, they are going to have to pay for it anyway.

The only reason I brought this up was because if someone buys NHL 14 in September for the 360, then they will need to keep their 360 hooked up until September 2014 when NHL 15 is released for the XBONE.

Xbox one is essentially an underpowered PC. The processor is equivalent to an Intel i3. This is also the reason it's not backwards compatible. The old processor is PowerPc based (like the older Macs) and the new processor is x86 based.

I'm happy I switched to PC gaming 2 years ago. My current rig is already better than the XBox Juan.

Still, though, most big-budget PC games are console ports...so having next-gen consoles with improved graphics capabilities will certainly up the level of games we get on the PC.

Not comparable. Your PC is doing a lot of other things, not just playing games. Just running Windows eat a lot of resources not available for gaming.
And the graphic card and RAM is way more important for games than processors. PS4 will have 8GB of GDDR5 Ram JUST for gaming. That's just crazy.
An Electronic Arts just said last week the Xbox One and the PS4 are better gaming systems than the best PCs available today.

So you actually think they're going to say, these new consoles are worse than todays PC's? Xbox Juan will run dual OS's - a variant of Windows 8 and some proprietary (AMD) OS. Now your talking overhead. It's not long before DDR5 is the mainstay like DDR3 is right now anyways. Being X86 based will make it way easier to port and refine games for PC, so I welcome the Juan.

Extremetech doesn't know anything about game developing, they are just tech gurus.
You can buy a $2000 PC but the game developpers will decide what to do with it and I'd rather listen to them:

http://www.develop-online.net/features/1826/PS4-26-developers-speak

Avalanche CTO and co-founder Linus Blomberg
"Absolutely. The hardware as such is great, and will outperform most PC's for many years to come. But the true greatness lies in the accessibility and ecosystem supporting it in terms of social connectivity and cloud services."

LOL. Depends what you define "most PCs" as.

There's no sense comparing these next-gen consoles to PCs, because the top end PC hardware today blows away the consoles, but it's also much more expensive. The new consoles represent a huge leap forward for gaming, and that's that.

Most PCs mean we are going to develop games to satisfy the majority and not the niche.

Like I said, a $2000 PC will have the best performance and in 3 years you're gonna upagrade it for $1000...
How many people can do that and will the developpers waste their time to get the best out of a $2000 PC ?

Not to mention there are a Dung number of game you will never play on a PC.

I think you're missing the point. Xbox Juan is X86 based, which is what 100% of all PCs are based on. It will be super easy to port games to PC.

I think they went this way to make it easier to build once supply many platforms to keep devlopement costs down. Today, on Xbox 360, you have to build a game on PowerPC platform than translate it to X86. It won't be the case with the Juan.

Bring on Juan, it will make for better PC games.

Who is doing the voice on that? Sounds like the guy who announces the lineups at Bingo games.

I'm hooked on Diablo 3 lately on PS3. Never bought the PC version.

I even got to play a few games with Matt Kassian, he seems hooked on it too:l:
